AirPlay stopped working after previously working

AirPlay used to work with Samsung TV and Roku but last week it stopped working.  When activated with Apple workout it will say Airplay for 5 seconds then go back to the Roku screen.  I have unplugged and restarted both several times es and tried Apple workout on another Samsung TV and it works fine.  It just stopped working last week.  Roku software is updated.

  • Hey, guys. Made this account just because I had the same issue and found a solution that worked for me. The only two steps that I did (but I feel the latter is probably what made the difference, inferring from the other messages here), is I:

    Reset my TV from the settings menu and;
Reset my Network Settings on my iOS device.

After that, voilà! Hope this helps someone else out!

  • I created this account just to say that your suggestion was the only solution that worked for me. Thank you!

  • I work at a school and for the last 5 years or so, we have been projecting in classrooms by plugging a Roku streaming stick into the HDMI port on the back of the projector and connecting our devices (macbooks, iPads, phones) via Airplay to the Roku. Randomly throughout the last month, there have been 7 teachers tell me their computer won't connect via airplay to the Roku anymore. The Roku shows up on the list of devices to airplay/mirror to, but it just spins until the error pops up that says it couldn't connect. Here are the troubleshooting steps I have tried (some worked for a day and then it just goes right back to not being able to connect):

    • Restarted Roku and Computer
    • Checked for updates on both Roku and Computer
    • Checked Wifi connection to make sure both devices are on same network and have good signal strength
    • "Forgot" the network (wifi) on both devices and reconnected to it on both devices
    • Tried other computers and devices and they won’t connect either
    • Plugged in the Roku power cord into an actual outlet, not the back of the projector
    • Made sure airplay is turned on for both devices
    • Factory reset the Roku and tried again
    • Tried a brand new Roku out of the box

I have talked to Roku support and they tell me it's because there is a glitchy network connection. We have tons of access points throughout our entire building including in each classroom. I checked the connection from our access points to the Roku, the connection is really good.

Since there are several Rokus with this issue I am only going to give you one for reference:

        • Model: 3810X - Roku streaming stick+ (but there are others with this issue that are Roku Streaming Stick 4K)
        • SN: YH00G2490842
        • ID: 21316G490842
        • Software version: 14.0.4
        • Tracker ID: 42-510-864
        • iOS Version: 18.2 Model: iPad Pro 11-inch (M4) - but this is happening with various devices such as other laptops, phones, iPads, etc.

I cannot provide images or a video but I will explain in detail:

        1. I turn on the Roku and make sure it is connected to the Internet
        2. On my device I go up to the top right panel and choose “Screen mirroring”
        3. From there I try to find the Roku on the list to airplay to, but sometimes it doesn’t even show up at all.
        4. If it does show up, I click on it and the icon spins like it is trying to connect to the Roku
        5. It continues to spin and about 20 seconds later, I get an error on the screen that says “Could not connect to ‘Roku name’”
        6. After trying all of the troubleshooting I listed previously, they either don’t work at all or work for about a day and then the issue continues to happen.

I was using it earlier today just fine, took a break then came back and now it won’t work. The connection buffers for a moment on my phone, the TV flashes the airplay logo then closes out. Even when I go into settings>apple airplay and homekit, then click on it to open the airplay app it also closes out immediately. I can use airplay on other devices fine.

Kevin2815, you have to select System and then you'll see Advanced system settings.

  • I’m having this same issue on two Roku 2 players, from my iPhone 12 (iOS 18.3), iPad 8G (iPadOS 18.3), and early 2014 MacBook Air (High Sierra 11.7.10). The reboot suggestions do not help.

Looking at other threads, it seems to be related to the recent Roku 14.1 OS update. OS updates periodically seem to break AirPlay (posts indicate this happened with Roku OS 13, and web searches indicate similar issues in the past, fixed only with a new update. Seems to be a recurring issue.

AirPlay worked in summer 2024, when I last showed photos to the TVs. I don’t know when AirPlay broke on the Roku 2s; I’m guessing it was OS 14 but can’t say for sure.

So, what are the plans for an update fix?

  • Did you ever find a solution? It is 2025 and I am facing the same challenge on my streaming stick 4k. I have never had issues mirroring from my iPad or iPhone and surprisingly today is the first day I am trying to mirror from my Mac and it is not working, iPhone connects seamlessly but I am facing your exact same issue on my Macbook. If you found a solution do let me know please.

I'm having this issue with a 65" onn. Roku TV, it connects and the AirPlay screen shows up but nothing gets casted to the TV.  I have tried your solution but it still doesn't work.

One thing I noticed was that the 65" onn. Roku TV does not display AirPlay Version when I go to About AirPlay.  The 50" onn. Roku TV does.
