BBC iPlayer stopped working with Sorry, this application is not currently available on your device

My almost new Express 4k 3940EU build 11.0.0 4193-CR has just started to refuse to load and play BBC iPlayer with the above error message. I have deleted app, restarted, added app with no difference. Factory reset device with no difference. Older Express (not 4k) works. BBC Sounds app works - I have noticed that the 3040EU isn't in the BBC's supported list.

Any suggestions?

  • Hi everyone,

Thanks for your patience while this issue was being investigated.

We would recommend checking for a channel update by selecting the channel on the Home screen and pressing the * button > Check for updates.

Once the channel is updated, try seeing if you able to access the channel again.

Please keep us posted what you find out.

    Happy Streaming!

Certainly you may complain, but you need to complain to the BBC. They are the one that provides the iPlayer channel, not Roku.

We can offer a suggestion or two, though. When you removed the channel, did you reboot your Roku before you installed it again? If not, then it wasn't really removed. You must reboot the Roku after removing a channel to ensure all the little pieces are completely gone.

jadiel this isn't a discussion board for Android based devices. Take your discussion elsewhere.

Are you saying that your Roku Express 4K (3940) did play the app previously? Or has it never worked on that particular device?

Worked fine until today. (So about 6 months)

My new Roku 4k stick, bought last week, gets the same message today on both BBC iPlayer and Sounds. All software up to date - and has worked fine for the last week. I think iPlayer was updated yesterday?

Not a good start to my Roku experience!

  • Hello, some apps on my roku are saying ‘sorry, this application is not currently available on your device’ but I’ve used it before. It’s bbc iplayer, so just wondering how I fix this?

    many thanks.

Several posts here mention this. Apparently, based on what other users are reporting, BBC updated their iPlayer app recently, and seems to have made an error in the code.

Each app developer determines where (location) the app is valid, and on which devices the app is valid. In this case, BBC did that. From the looks of things, they did it badly this go round, and broke the app from working on many devices on which the app previously worked.

BBC will have to issue an update containing the fix for the app to resume working.

  • Yes, exactly the same problem and attempts to resolve as described by io1901.  iPlayer and BBC Sounds worked yesterday 6th June 2022, but will not launch today.  All guidance and instructions applied, no change, all other apps working OK.

  • Same issue on my Roku Streambar, must be a software issue of some kind.

BBC Iplayer was working fine for me last night.

I have tried the old solutions for BBC iPlayer not loading and they do not work.

Symptoms: Message displayed on selecting iPlayer - "Sorry, this applicationis not currently available on your device. Please exit/quit and try again later."

This only started tonight, 19:00 BST  in UK.  All other applications work except BBC Sounds, which shows the same message.

I can access iPlayer on my other devices (tablet, laptop). My ROKU device is a new streaming stick 4k.

    Any suggestions welcome.

    Rab

      I have the same problem

I have model 9102X Roku Soundbar.

      Uninstalled App

      Re-booted Roku

      Re-installed App

      Same problem persists

App loads on Smart TV App ok, so no problem at the BBC.

      Same here. Worked yesterday.

Factory reset Roku and updated BBC iPlayer, no joy.  Will try return under guarantee as less than one year old.  No doubt they will blame the BBC.  And for all I know, they'll be right.

BBC iPlayer app on phone works fine, connected to the same WiFi network. So the BBC is not blocking my IP address.

        Replying to my own post:

My Roku Express 4K is type 3940x.  Ihave just found that this is not listed by the BBC on their iPlayer help page as a model that they support.   I don't know if they ever supported it, as their page about devices that are no longer supported is no longer present.

    I have a streambar ( 9102EU ) running software version 11.0.0 build 4193-95

BBC iPlayer no longer work and all we get is the message this application is not available on your device. Have checked for updates, removed and reinstalled the channel, restarted the streambar, nothing worked. I just wanted to report that this error was affecting the streambar too.

There are other threads on this. Here's the main one. It's long and rambles.

The upshot is that BBC issued an app update recently that appears to contain a flaw in the code. The flaw stops the app from working on certain devices. That's because it's up to the developers to code which devices are allowed to use the app. It seems BBC made a boo-boo and has yet to acknowledge it.

Roku has asked for data from those with the issue so they can better convince BBC to fix their code.

iPlayer is still working on my Roku Express, albeit sometimes freezing and having to exit and reopen, and with annoying little bursts of static, all since June. However it appears to have prompted five simultaneous iPlayer password reset requests last night at the exact moment I switched it off according to email alerts. Has anyone else experienced this? Needless to say I ignored them and iPlayer is still opening fine. Thanks.
