New Roku Ultra remote won't control Sony OLED

Just purchased a Roku Ultra - 2022 version to replace a previous Roku 2020 version. For whatever reason the new device won't configure to control a Sony OLED (2020 model). the device attempts to configure, but the music never turns off and the Ultra never tries any other codes but 1. Simply indicates it can't control the TV. Connected via HDMI.

the previous Roku worked just fine.

Thoughts?

I bought a new Ultra 4802x in early October.  I paired it with my Sharp TV and was able to control power on/off, and volume (up/down/mute).

Like other owners, the Roku remote lost all those capabilities after the update to OS 11.5 in November.

I checked the TV settings and they shoe no change to the HDMI-CEC settings (and I see the Roku box in the list of detected devices).

I tried the pairing steps and they didn't work; I even tried 'lying' about the music stopping but that didn't work either.

Is there a way to rollback the OS update?  Is Roku technical team working on a solution to this apparently widespread bug?

      Thanks for the post.

Can you please provide us with the following information so we can investigate the issue further:

      1. Roku device model, Serial number, Device ID, Software OS/version (these can all be found in Settings > System > About)
      2. Does this issue occur on a specific channel? If so, what channel and what version/build is the channel (this can be found by selecting the channel on the Home screen and pressing the * button)
      3. Tracker ID when this issue occurs (when you see this issue occur, press the Home button 5 times, followed by the Back button 5 times, and provide us with this ID)
      4. Steps to reproduce the issue you are seeing
      5. TV make & model
      6. When the issue started

Once we have this information, I'll be able to pass it along to the appropriate Roku team to investigate further.

      Thanks,
      Danny

        1. Model Roku 4802x, serial number x01000666EMD, software version 11.5.0 build 4235-C2

        2. It occurs on home screen and ALL channels.

        3. Tracker ID MD-470-613.

        4. Steps to reproduce: power on TV with its remote; try to power off with Roku remote (fails); try to raise/lower/mute TV (all fail).

        5. TV: Sharp LC-75N620CU

        Thank you

  • Same problem here.  It's been working great until just yesterday, now it won't turn off my Sony TV and I've lost volume control.  I've reset the remote and factory reset the Roku.  I guess I'm gonna have to box this thing up.

Is there any way to have Roku control the volume of my XBR-43X800E using CEC??

I have enabled Bravia Sync on my Sony XBR-43X800E TV for the (brand new) 2022 Roku Ultra (4802R) and the Roku appears on the Bravia Sync devices list. Going through the Roku remote setup, it recognizes the SONY brand but reminds me to point the remote at the TV and completes the IR remote setup. It suggests that to setup HDMI-CEC I go to the cec-help webpage where I find the instructions to enable Sony Bravia Sync, which are the exact same steps I had previously accomplished. It appears the Roku never even attempts volume control via CEC. (I have retried after a factory rest on the TV and also with an alternate HDMI cable.)

I have, at the same time, been successful in accomplishing CEC power/volume control of two Sony XBR-55X900E TVs with identical Roku units, so I expected this to be equally easy. IR control doesn't suit my system layout or desires. I do hope to make this work!

I would try re-programmable it for the Sony but skip the first positive result by clicking NO even if the sound muted and see if subsequent codes work better.

If that doesn't work, try searching Sceptre or Westinghouse tv codes? Two known brands that at one time used the Sony code set.

  • My Roku ultra cannot turn my Sony bravia 4k vh21 TV on or off, and cannot control the volume.  How can I fix that problem?

marceepoo Did the ultra previously control the volume and on/off on your Sony TV?  Have you gone into settings and set up the remote to control the TV?

There could be a few different reasons why your new Roku Ultra is having difficulty controlling your Sony OLED TV. Here are a few things you can try to troubleshoot the issue:

    1. Make sure that your TV and Roku Ultra are connected to the same network. This is necessary for the Roku Ultra to be able to control your TV.

    2. Check the HDMI port that you are using to connect your Roku Ultra to your TV. Make sure that it is not damaged and that it is securely plugged in.

    3. Try using a different HDMI cable to connect your Roku Ultra to your TV. Sometimes the HDMI cable can be the cause of connectivity issues.

    4. Reset your Roku Ultra and try the setup process again. To reset your Roku Ultra, go to the "System" menu in the settings and select "System restart."

    5. If you are still having difficulty, you may want to try using a different HDMI port on your TV. Some TVs have more than one HDMI port, and using a different port may help resolve the issue.

If none of these steps help, it is possible that there is a compatibility issue between your Sony OLED TV and the new Roku Ultra. In this case, you may want to contact Roku customer support or Sony customer support for further assistance.

  • Purchased a new TCL TV. The right arrow and the volume up button on the remote are not responding. The TVs Serial # is 2207GTC012054B00847 and Model # is 55S455-CA. Any suggestion on how to fix this? Thank you.

      That doesn't sound good.

The remotes that come with Roku TVs -- which, by the way, are made by TV manufactures such as TCL and not by Roku -- are infrared remotes. They are very simple remotes. That's not a bad thing, just a statement that the physical devices are not complicated.

As such, when issues arise, there are few things to try. Since it's new, I'm doubtful these suggestions will work, but it's worth a shot.

Try blowing out the contacts with air. Perhaps blowing there will do, but a can of compressed air would be better. It's good to have a can of that around for cleaning keyboards and such.

If that doesn't do the job, it could simply be a defective remote. As TCL, not Roku, made the device, you would have to contact them. Where to get support for your Roku TV

I never heard back from "technical support", but Roku customer support sent me a replacement remote, which fixed the problem immediately (for now).

  • Make sure you are running sound through the TV and not a receiver or sound bar when you attempt the pairing.  If you are, you can simply answer "no" to the "can you still hear the music" prompt.
