That doesn't sound good.
The remotes that come with Roku TVs -- which, by the way, are made by TV manufactures such as TCL and not by Roku -- are infrared remotes. They are very simple remotes. That's not a bad thing, just a statement that the physical devices are not complicated.
As such, when issues arise, there are few things to try. Since it's new, I'm doubtful these suggestions will work, but it's worth a shot.
Try blowing out the contacts with air. Perhaps blowing there will do, but a can of compressed air would be better. It's good to have a can of that around for cleaning keyboards and such.
If that doesn't do the job, it could simply be a defective remote. As TCL, not Roku, made the device, you would have to contact them. Where to get support for your Roku TV
I never heard back from "technical support", but Roku customer support sent me a replacement remote, which fixed the problem immediately (for now).
