Apple TV won't sign in - gives "Verification Failed" with known-working Apple ID login/pass.

Hi, the Apple TV channel on my new Roku 4k stick (model 3820X) won't sign in with a known working Apple ID login and password.   I've tried uninstalling the channel, restarted the Roku, and reinstalled it but without any resolution for the login issue.

I just tested my login email and password on Apple ID account management, Apple TV website, and iCloud - all working but my Roku only says "Verification Failed" these past few days of trying.  My Apple ID has two-factor authentication and no verification alert pops up on any of my devices when attempting to sign in on Roku.  This account works fine with the AppleTV app on other streaming devices.   Strangely, the Apple TV channel only says "Sign In or Sign Up" - you can only sign up on the website and only "Sign In with Remote" - see screenshot.  I saw solutions with using the QR code in the Apple TV Channel but I don't have that at all - I wish I did, I would use that instead!!  Is my firewall blocking the QR code?

Here's a screenshot of my login screen:

Got my devices signed and working with Apple TV now. Here is the process that worked for me.

    1. Uninstall Apple TV from device

    2. Remove power for 30 seconds

    3. Install Apple TV app

    4. Launch Apple TV and select "Sign In Later"

    5. Navigate to the Cog setting and Select Accounts -> Sign-in

    6. Use the QR code to sign-in

This is exactly what I am experiencing with a new 3820x on Apple TV plus.

I have a 3810X and wanted a spare remote. The 3820X was on sale for Black Friday. When it arrived, I discovered there is a speed difference between the two Roku devices. As such, I replaced my 3810X with a 3820X. During set-up for Apple TV+ (a new subscription), I was not given the QR code option to authenticate with a mobile device. The only option was "Sign In with Remote." I tried Sign In with Remote more than 20 times and each time it failed to authenticate with an error message:

        "Verification Failed"

"There were errors signing you in. Wait a moment, then try again"

Many times, I uninstalled the app, cleared the cache, rebooted the Roku, and installed the app again. Each time, it failed in the exact same way.

I went to another 3810X and opened the Apple TV+ app. It immediately gave me a QR code and I registered successfully.

I replaced the 3810X with the old device and opened the Apple TV+ app. It immediately gave me a QR code and I registered successfully.

The software version on both 3810X devices is: 11.5.0 - Build 4235-50
The software version on the new 3820X device is: 11.5.0 - Build 4235-CU

  • Having the exact same problem with a brand new Roku TV.  If there is no solution I'll just return it.  i assume it has something to do with two part authentication, but my screen looks just like yours.  There is no where to enter a code, if one where sent.  Also, No where is there a spot to sign in with apple.com/activate on another device.

Just want to add that I have the same issue.  I am trying to upgrade to the latest stick, but apple tv won't login.  I also don't get the option to sign in with mobile like on my older 4k stick.  Let's hope somebody figures something out and that someone takes responsibility for it.

HDMIGuy do you have 2 factor on your apple account?

    I just bought a Roku 4K stick (3820X).

When I try to sign in on Apple TV, there is no option to sign in on a mobile device like there has been on every other Roku device I've owned.

So I attempted to sign in with my Roku remote, and it keeps telling me "Verification Failed." I think the problem here is that Apple uses 2 factor authentication. When you sign in with a remote versus mobile browser, there's no way to do 2FA.

I've done all the troubleshooting suggested here:

Me too.  They probably just need to update the software for that model to support 2 factor.

I am having the same issue - no option to sign in via QR code or via mobile.

      Hi everyone,

      Thanks for the posts.

If the issue persists after removing then reinstalling the channel, contact the channel provider's customer support team to report the issue and get help. Channels on Roku are maintained by the channel developer themselves. In this case, there's likely an issue within that specific channel that needs to be addressed with an update from them.

You can reach them here: Apple TV - Official Apple Support

      We appreciate your understanding.

      All the best,
      Kariza

Apple Support is repeatedly telling customers this is a Roku issue and not an Apple issue. Please reach out to your contacts within Apple and include the 20+ support posts then maybe they will better understand how this is on them to fix.

  • I have the exact same problem as jackavram. For what it is worth, I spent just a bit over an hour on the phone with Apple support yesterday and the outcome was talk to Roku. Maybe the next update to the Apple TV app will solve the problem.

  • jackavram I have Apple TV on a new streaming stick 4k.  I just signed out and signed back in using the sign in with remote.  No problem.  However I have a QR code to the left of the sign in with remote choice.  I don't have a solution but thought I would share my experience.  If the firewall is blocking the QR code is it also blocking information that Apple needs to sign in with remote?

  • I have the exact same issue after purchasing a new roku. I think it has something to do with the free 3 months trial flow as I don’t have this same issue on my previous roku. With the new Roku, there’s not even a way for me to sign in via mobile or at least by going to activate.apple.com and inputting a code. They only gave me the option to sign in via remote and it always results in a verification failure because i have 2FA enabled and that isn't handled in the app. I'm guessing the 3 month free trial is breaking the flow for the newly purchased devices. Appreciate any assistance. Thanks.

  • HDMIGuy I have the exact same issue with the exact same device Roku Streaming Stick 4K 3820X, newly purchased. I think this has something to do with the free 3 months Apple TV trial. Being eligible for that probably breaks the entry point for signing in. I'm saying this because I don't have this issue with my older Roku. I can add using a QR code just fine. They're both connected to the same network. Both have the same Roku firmware version as well as Apple TV channel version. cc jackavram

I also have another issue wherein I'm unable to Airplay to the Roku. It keeps saying that the PIN entered is wrong even if it's correct. Same issue with setting up HomeKit. It says the code is wrong. I tried with both my iPhone and MacBook and got similar results so it's very likely that it's an issue with this new Roku device. I don't have this issue with my older Roku Streaming Stick 3800X. Do you have the same issue as well?

ivanahtannica jackavram When I signed into Apple on my Roku Streaming Stick 4k I declined the free 3 months because my daughter has a subscription to Apple TV and uses family share to share with me.  I have not tried Airplay or HomeKit.

HDMIGuy Thanks. I have a subscription as well, but there's no way around the 3 months free trial as far as I can tell. I can't even use it as well even if I want to since the sign-in issue is still there regardless.

  • I just started to encounter this problem a couple of days ago on my Roku Streambar.  I was having issues with Apple shows freezing up constantly. (Note:  I have no issues with other channels.)  So, I removed and reloaded the Apple TV channel thinking that might help - big mistake.  Now I get the same sign in screen with no option to use my mobile device/QR code, and signing in with the remote gets the "Verification Failed" message (Error Code: N/63D93E47).  None of the workarounds recommended in this thread have worked, so the only thing that I can do until this app issue is fixed is to stream Apple programs on my Apple devices and use Roku's Airplay feature to show them on my TV.  Has anyone received an update from Roku Support on their issue tickets?
