Roku Ultra (4640X) stuck on Roku Bouncing LOGO

Count me in with another 4640X that stopped working very recently, and just has the dancing ROKU letters.

The letters bounce for 27 or 28 seconds, then the device tries to reboot, repeat ad nauseum.

If it was an update that caused this, did they brick our devices?  I don't think it'll be possible for them to send a fix since the Roku can't get into a state where it can receive the fix...

  • Issue started a few days ago.  Have tried the following:

-Tried another power supply from another roku

    -new hdmi cable

-unplugged for hours and plugged back in.

Remains stuck in a boot loop where it cant access any menus, just dancing roku symbol for around 10 seconds then reboots-- and repeats the same process.

I think I resolved the issue --there is a small rubber reset button on the very bottom of the unit (same color as black rubber).  Held for around 10 seconds and performed a factory reset....seems to be stable now but have to setup all my logins again 😭

The 4640X is a series of the Roku Ultra player, not a Roku TV. Find the TV model number and search the community for assistance for your specific issue.

Start a new post if you are unable to find a thread with an identical issue for your specific TV model and series.

        Good luck.

        Cheers!

Model 4640x has been made unusable by update. Working okay before update. Now stuck in rebooting loop. All 4640x users should replace with a new $100 model. Just dispose of the non working 4640x at the nearest electronics recycling facility.

Better customer relations would have provided a way to get some sort of credit for being a current user of their product and services.

Better yet, leave the old units working as they were before the update while offering a discount to upgrade.

I am having difficulties with justification of purchasing a replacement.

Having the same issue.  Tried to watch a show but the apps kept crashing and going to the main screen.  Looked for updates and there wasn’t any.  Tried using the system restart and am now stuck in a reboot loop.  Tried a power supply, new cables and even the reset button and nothing worked.
I truly hope that this wasn’t caused by an update and Roku just expects me to buy a new unit.  If that’s true I would have to rethink my Rokus.  I have three, this one and two newer ones.  Two are on smart TVs but I had the Roku 1st so I never used the smart TVs menu.  Time to start I guess.(?)

  • I have the same 4640x Roku as the other posters and it is also stuck in a boot loop. I tried the suggestions you previously outlined. Updating, factory resetting, unplugging for 10 seconds, trying different HDMI ports or TV's... Nothing is working.

I got mine to finally fix itself by unplugging, holding the reset button down for like 30 seconds to discharge any residual power, and then -while holding the reset button still- plugging it back in and finally releasing the button after 10 seconds. It went into factory reset after that.

This was not the first time I tried this so just keep at it and maybe it'll work for you too!

        elucidator This is the way!

I did all of the other things with resets and finally the fix was the discharging of the power. I noticed during this process that my HDMI cable if wiggled just right would drop the connection. Possibly a short in the unit or something. I work with computers a lot and have saved many laptops and desktops doing this same discharging of power.

      Thanks elucidator!

I tried your solution (but held reset for approx 20 seconds after bouncing letter logo showed up) and it booted into the setup screen, and I could set it up from there.  It didn't have any of my old data, but it is working again.

      Thanks again!

Add one more to the list of reboot loop stuck 4640x units.  Sure seems like Roku was the cause of this issue.  Hope they can fix this.  If not, I might have to look elsewhere.  I have three Rokus (two are newer) but really only need one since the other TVs are smart tvs.

  • Hello Judy,

Does your 4640X eventually land on the Recovery Mode screen?

If not, you may have a different issue. Search the Roku Community site for your specific issue. If you're unable to find the specific issue with your player start a new post.

If your 4640X player is displaying the Recovery Mode page and you're not able to recover after attempting to update, then restart, and then factory reset, a Roku Community Moderator should be contacting you via PM. If you do recovery use please update this comment so the moderator knows your issue is resolved or unrelated.

If this was an update issue and Roku is working on a fix, it is possible for Roku to send out an update. From the recovery mode screen we can connect our players to Wi-Fi/Ethernet in order to update our players. Therefore if Roku does manage to fix/patch the issue affecting 4640X players it may be possible for us to recover use of our 4640X Roku Ultra devices.

    Good luck.

    Cheers!

Hi, thanks for the help, I appreciate it!

My 4640X wasn't entering the recovery page, just had the bouncing ROKU letters.

However, my issue is fixed (at least for now).    I tried the solution posted above by elucidator

I pressed and held the reset (on bottom of device), inserted power plug into Roku, bouncing letters appeared, and held the reset for around 20 seconds from there.

Eventually after the bouncing ROKU letters, the language select screen came up, and I had to re-register the device.  I had to proceed to set up as if was a new device, and none of my app data is stored from before, but it's working.

      Thanks JCameronHollis and elucidator!

        Hi RokuRiamie-D RokuJohnB

Thank you for reaching out regarding the issue with your Roku Ultra 4640X. Here’s a summary of the troubleshooting steps I’ve taken so far:

        1. Power Source: I have confirmed that the Roku device is plugged directly into a wall outlet, not a power strip. I have also attempted to restart the Roku device by unplugging it for about 10 seconds and then plugging it back in.
        2. Timing of the Issue: Not sure what time it started, found out yesterday when I switched hdmi to roku input and saw the dancing Roku.
        3. HDMI Cable: I have tried using a different HDMI cable and also switched the HDMI outputs on the back of my TV, but the problem persists. I ensured that my TV is set to the correct input source for the Roku device

Please let me know if there are any additional steps I should take or if you need further information.

        Thank you for your assistance!

        Best regards,
