Can you confirm if your screen was totally black? If so, you can unplug and re-plug the TV. If this does not help, kindly perform a reset on your device by locating and clicking on the reset button.

If all else fails, you can try to adjust the Settings > Display type setting when you can't see the screen. After booting up the Roku and getting past the bouncing letters startup display:

A• Press the remote Home button 2 times (Makes sure you're on the home screen at correct position with no screen saver running)

B• Up (Go to Settings)

C• OK or Right (Go into Settings options)

D• Down 3 times (Highlight Display type. It passes through Theme on the way and this may take a few seconds before moving on) so wait 30 seconds or so before continuing.

D• OK (Chooses Display Type option)

F• Up (Moves off current Display Type setting to next one up)

G• OK (Selects this Display Type setting)

At this point, the Roku will try to use the selected Display Type setting. The TV may take a few seconds to adjust to this new setting.

If you see a picture, click the "Yes, looks good" button to lock in this setting.

If you don't see anything, wait about 15 seconds, then hit OK to click the unseen default "No, there's a problem" button to return you to the menu.

H• If you have not found a resolution setting that works, repeat steps F and G to try the next Display option. Repeat until you find one that works.

Staying at a hotel that only has **bleep** hdmi wireless transmitter and no way to plug directly to the tv and I KNEW the issue was it didn't support the resolution that the Roku auto detected since it worked just fine on the 720p boot screen. Your guide to how to reach the display settings when you couldn't see them was a god send. Roku should have a safe mode option to boot in to lowest display settings.

This was really helpful many thanks. I mistakenly set my Mum's Roku to 1080p as it looked ok, but then the TV started saying Invalid Format with no picture.  My Mum only has the one TV so I was really stuck untill I saw your post.  ROKU need to think about a simple standard way to sort this, e.g. a three button press (like Ctrl Alt Del) for a blind display format auto select.

I apologize as I am not intending on hijacking this thread but I have a similar issue. 

My ROKU ULTRA is connected to a AVR which is connected to Monitor.  My AVR passes 4K and monitor supports up to 8K.  HDMI cables all certified for super hi def.  Problem is the roku always resets my display settings to auto but this looks pretty bad on my monitor.  When I manually set to 4K pic looks great, but next time I turn on roku the settings revert back to auto in display settings.  I found a post on how to get to the hidden menu and tried to set it for 4K but yet still resets every time I cycle the roku.  Is there anything I can do to fix this?

I don't think my previous post is what you need for a Roku that keeps going back to its auto detect Display type setting.

When the "HDMI handshake" between the Roku and the TV or other display indicates the display device doesn't support the current Roku display settings, by default the Roku's "automatic recovery" kicks in and switches the Roku back to "auto detect" mode. If the display (or an intermediate device you are connecting through) incorrectly reports during the handshake that a support capability you have successfully set the Roku to use is not supported, this can cause the Roku to switch back to "auto detect" when you don't want it to.

You can currently turn this "automatic recovery" feature off via a "secret menu" option.
[CAVEAT: "secret menus" are not officially supported and may be discontinued at any time]

To access the ROKU HDMI secret menu:

Press Home five times.
Immediately press Down, then Left.
Press Up three times.
The HDMI secret menu should open.
Click on "disable automatic recovery" to turn it off.
