Re: Roku Android app causing excessive battery drain

Hi Kash,

I am using the current version, currently that's:

Roku Android version: 9.5.1.2109001

Phone: Google Pixel 7

OS: Android 13 (security update 5 July 2023)

But this has been happening for quite a while. I don't use the app at all and it still drains 10%+ battery.
I tried deleting completely and reinstalling but that didn't help.

I'm also using version 9.5.1.2109001 of the Roku app, on a Galaxy S10e running Android 12.

Re: Roku Android app causing excessive battery drain

Hi @W8877 @DTM54,

Welcome, and thanks for posting to the Roku Community!

We understand you are having problems with the Roku Mobile app draining your phone's battery. We're happy to help. Please go to Settings, Battery, and Data Usage to see which apps use the most data. Tap on the Roku mobile app or any app you'd like to restrict and disable background data. You can also turn on the battery-saver mode manually on your phone.

Let us know if it works.

All the best,

Eunice

Re: Roku Android app causing excessive battery drain

RokuEuniceL,

Please read the posts before replying. Had you done so, you would know that this has nothing to do with data use, it's about battery drain. You would also know that using battery saver doesn't help because it causes the private listening feature to mute every few minutes.

Is Roku going to actually address the problem with their app or just keep deflecting the question until we give up?

Re: Roku Android app causing excessive battery drain

Hi @DTM54 @W8877,

Thanks for keeping us posted!

We would be more than happy to look further into this issue, but we will need more details. Can you please provide us with the following information:

  • Roku device model, serial number, device ID, and software OS/version (these can all be found in Settings > System > About)
  • Brand, model, and current OS that the mobile device is running.
  • Version of the Roku mobile app that your mobile device is using
  • Steps to reproduce the issue you are seeing

Once we have this information, we will be able to pass it along to the appropriate Roku team to investigate further.

Thanks,

Re: Roku Android app causing excessive battery drain

Roku Device: 3820X Streaming Stick 4K

Device ID: S08Y423H2V7U

Software version: 12.0.0 build 4184-CU

Phone: Samsung Galaxy S10e

Phone O/S: Android 12

Roku app version: 9.5.1.2109001

Steps to reproduce:

  1. Open the app and connect to the Roku device.
  2. Enable private listening.
  3. When finished watching the program, you can close the app (or not), but don't force stop it. (Force stopping it is the only thing that prevents the battery drain.)
  4. App will massively drain the battery.

Some additional info:

  • Uninstall/reinstall does not help.
  • Clearing cache does not help.
  • Clearing data does not help.
  • Limiting background battery use to any extent causes the audio to mute every few minutes, so this is not a feasible procedure. Let me be clear: you must allow completely unrestricted background battery use or the private listening feature becomes useless.

Re: Roku Android app causing excessive battery drain

One undesirable feature of the Roku Android App is that it does not permit the Android device to turn off and lock the display.  This causes excessive battery drain.  The display only needs to be presented when the user wishes to change something, not all the time.  All other Android apps that I have installed permit the display to be turned off and locked.

Re: Roku Android app causing excessive battery drain

If the Roku app on your Android device is causing excessive battery drain, there are several steps you can take to troubleshoot and resolve this issue:

Updates often include bug fixes that can resolve issues like excessive battery usage.

If your device's operating system is outdated, it might be incompatible with the Roku app or not optimizing battery usage effectively. Updating to the latest version of Android might help to resolve the issue. https://apkbyte.com

If the Roku app is running in the background, it can drain your battery even when you're not actively using it. To check this, go to your Android device's settings, then "Apps" or "Applications", find the Roku app, and look at its battery usage details. If it is consuming power in the background, you might want to restrict its background activity.

If the Roku app is set to push frequent notifications, this can also drain battery life. You can disable or limit these in the app's settings or in the device's application settings.

Excessive battery drain could be due to connectivity issues. Turn off Wi-Fi, mobile data, and Bluetooth, then turn them back on.

If none of these solutions work, it may be worthwhile to reach out to Roku's customer support for further assistance.  https://support.roku.com/
