Remote stopped working even with new batteries

Jump to solution

My simple roku remote just stopped working. It's the simple version, which means it should just be a change of batteries. However, it's not working at all even after I've changed the batteries. Any other ideas?

Hi @Ken24, thank you for joining us here in the Roku Community!

We appreciate you bringing this issue to our attention. Have you tried resetting your Roku remote by following these troubleshooting steps?

You can reset your Roku remote by pressing and holding the Back and Home buttons simultaneously for about 20 seconds. After doing so, pair it again.

In the meantime, please consider using our Roku mobile app for temporary and backup remotes. For detailed instructions, please refer to our dedicated support article: How to use the Roku mobile app.

Hope this helps!

Best regards,
Jharra

  • Be sure you have the batteries inserted in the orientation shown inside the battery compartment.
  • Test whether the remote is issuing infrared signals in the first place by pointing the remote at a digital camera (one in a phone or tablet will do) and viewing the top end of the remote in the camera view screen while pressing various remote keys.  If the remote is working, you should see key presses produce a glow on the end of the remote.
  • It's possible the problem is with the Roku unit, not the remote.

Thanks! The batteries are in correctly and I'm not seeing any lights when pressing buttons. Perhaps it just needs to be replaced. Roku is working on my TV if I use the phone app, so I'm guessing the remote just died (although I haven't had it all that long). Thank you!

Just to state the obvious, there's nothing blocking the front of the Roku player so the remote signals can be seen by it, right? The simple remote uses Infrared light that requires a direct line of sight between the Roku and the remote.

No, there is nothing blocking it - everything is fully accessible

Thank you for posting here in the Roku Community, @CO24.

I see that your Roku Players (simple) Remote is not working and I'd be happy to help you with this.

Could you first provide me with the serial number of the Roku player this was connected to so I can check and validate it? Also, is this the remote that came with it?

In the meantime, you may refer to our support article dedicated to this: How to fix your Roku Players (simple) remote that is not working

I'll be looking forward to your response.

Best regards,
Carly

I am having the same issue. I ran the most recent update and at first it worked fine. But the first time i restarted the roku, it could not connect with the remote. It says pairing when it first starts but then it says Not Connected int he upper right, and all the buttons dont work (excpet the volyme controls on the remote do work). Can you help?

Yes, this is the original remote it came with.  I've read quite a few articles but nothing that has solved the problem.  Thank you!

We're grateful to have you here in the Roku Community, @Natjane!

Thanks for reporting the issues you've been experiencing with your Roku remote after the software update. I'd be happy to look closely into this matter and find the best resolution possible.

Before proceeding, kindly let me know the following so I can assess your concern better:

  • What specific Roku player are you having this issue with? Is this the remote that comes with it?
  • Did this happen prior to the recent software update?

In the meantime, let's try resetting your remote by pressing and holding the Back and Home buttons simultaneously for about 20 seconds and pairing it again to see if this resolves the issue.

I'll be looking forward to your update!

Best regards,
Carly
