Can you use the Roku ultra remote to control volume on my Sonos surround sound system?

This Roku remote control will work with any Roku TV model, most Roku streaming players, and Roku audio devices. It can also be configured for TV control, but not for other external devices.

Is this true that my new Roku Ulta that is replacing an old Roku will not communicate with my external sound bar like the old one did? Should I return the device or is there a work around?

To clarify your question, yes, you will be able to control your third-party soundbar as you have a Roku Ultra. This device has a Roku OS that communicates with your TV and is one of the requirements for using the Roku remote. As long as your TV's CEC settings are enabled, it should work fine.

I have a Samsung TV with Sonos Ray and optical connection from the Sonos to the TV. I programmed the Roku Ultra remote to control the TV and Sonos sound. It works, but intermittently  when I turn on the TV I get no sound and need to restart the Ultra to get it to work?? This has happened a few times since I installed this.

The Sonos Ray can be taught to respond to the tv volume commands, this feature has nothing to do with Roku remote controlling it. Reteach Sonos Ray using the Roku remote programmed for the Samsung tv commands. Or reprogram the Roku remote for your Samsung but skip the first positive result by clicking YES and see if later code works better on your Sonos Ray.
