When a Roku app asks for a TV provider, can I specify Hulu Live TV or Sling?

Jump to solution

I am planning to drop Optimum as a cable provider and switch to Hulu Live TV on my Roku devices.

Will I be able to specify Hulu as my provider for a Roku apps (such as CNN) which ask for TV provider?  I know I will be able to watch CNN within Hulu.  My question is regarding the individual Roku apps which ask me for a provider.

Thanks.

Hi @vkundakci,

Welcome, and thanks for posting to the Roku Community!

We understand your concerns about the contents of an app/channel using a Roku device. It is important to keep in mind that we do not program apps for our channel partners. They will most likely provide a variety of app bundles tailored to the platform, and the channel partner is solely responsible for managing these apps.

Because there may be instances in which the particular channel provider demands additional information or facts on the subscribers that we do not have access to, we recommend that our customers contact the channel provider directly.

In addition, some channels require a TV or cable provider subscription in order to access the content available on their channels.

Please be aware that Roku is not a TV or cable provider but rather a streaming platform on which you can watch content.

Thanks for your understanding!

All the best,
Chel

@vkundakci In most cases, you should be just fine using Hulu Live TV as your provider. it of course is up to the individual service if they consider Hulu an authorized provider. You would need to confirm it with the service provider (such as CNN), but in most cases streaming providers such as Hulu do meet the requirements.

I have neither of those services but I'm currently experimenting with replacing DirecTV satellite (now on suspension) with YouTube TV.  "TV provider" channel apps I have on Roku via my DirecTV account continue to authenticate with YouTube TV as my provider, as long as YouTube TV also carries the channel.

I'd expect your experience would be the same with any of the "cable replacement" streaming services.  Just be sure it carries your channels of interest.

Generally works fine on most of my apps, except CBS. CBS Sports works fine but the regular CBS app doesn't list Hulu as a provider. if I want to watch whatever is on regular CBS I have to open my Hulu Live app and access CBS that way. All the CBS stuff is there and accessible to watch, which is okay but I don't like scrolling through everything on the Hulu app to find CBS, I'd much rather like to be able to access CBS through the app.
