I have a Roku express on my non-smart TV and I am trying to set up the Roku app so I can use the remote feature on there when needed. I live in an apartment complex with complex wifi, so I cannot connect through wifi. I have tried inputting the IP address for my Roku several times and it keeps telling me “a Roku device was not found at this IP address”. I have tried turning off private wifi address in my phone settings as well and that did not help
It sounds like you are using a semi-public network within your apartment complex. It's highly likely they are using a security feature that blocks connected devices from seeing other connected devices. You will never be able to use your app on such a network, and they will not disable that security feature to allow it.
There are ways to create your own private internal network using the apartment WiFi as the Internet source, but it's too complicated to go through the details here.
@RokuJechealR No qualified network administrator would turn that security setting off. If this is a managed network for the entire complex, that security setting is mandatory, and as a user I would never want it turned off, as that exposes everything I have connected to hackers.
Looking through the other threads on here people were saying it resolved similar issues on theirs so I turned it off on my phone for maybe 30 seconds to see if it would help and it did not. My apartment certainly did it and I did not leave it off for extended periods of time, don’t worry. Thank you for the concern though.
