Hi,

Yes I tried resetting the router and tried different internet connections.
The default response for this issue does not work for me.

My situation is a little different, I believe.
This is a Roku Ultra that I bought years ago (like 10 years ago maybe).
This is the first time I'm hooking it up to a TV.
My best guess is that the internal CA certificates are expired, and the device is unable to pull down the software update (can't establish a TLS connection).

The device is able to connect to the Wifi, get an IP address, and verify the internet connection.

Is there a way to install the firmware update via a USB stick?
This is not a Roku TV.
I need the update software for a Roku Ultra.

Error 003 - Can't update software

I cannot install my Roju box, it gives me the 003 error. The only response to this from Roku is to adress the router but that is NOT the problem. The problem is with Roku, please tell me when you will address and fix this please.

  • Can you confirm if you are trying to set up the Roku device for the first time?

Please follow the basic troubleshooting steps here to get up and streaming:

  1. Power cycle the Roku device.
  2. Power cycle the internet router.
  3. Network connection reset.
  4. Connect using a mobile hotspot.

If you continue to have trouble, please reference our helpful FAQ article here. This page will provide common concerns, troubleshooting, error codes, and recommended actions.

If the troubleshooting steps don't resolve the issue, please provide the following details when the problem occurs:

  • When the problem happens, quickly hit Home five times, then Back five times to take a picture of the Tracker ID, serial number/device ID, and software OS/version of your Roku device.

Hi, I'm having the same issue - new Roku Ultra that will not update on first boot. I have tried home wifi, wired, phone hotspot, and a 5G hotspot.  All of those connections are fast and strong, but continually get error 003.

My issue ID is 17-273-608

I’ve followed Community recommendations, web search suggestions and several neighbor’s as well, NO LUCK after more than 5 hours. I have Fiberoptic broadband with 105Mbps up and download. I’ve unloaded all other devices, including other functioning streaming devices, and still error 003. What is next?

Please be advised that we have forwarded this to the appropriate Roku team who'll conduct further investigations to address the issue.

In the meantime, to help us with our investigation, kindly provide the following details below:

  • Internet Service Provider (ISP): Who do you get your internet service from (e.g., Xfinity, Spectrum)?
  • Router/Modem Brand & Model: What brand and specific model of router and modem do you have?
  • Roku Device Details:
    • Model (e.g., Roku Streaming Stick+ 4K)
    • Serial Number
    • Device ID
    • Software OS/Version (You can find this information under Settings > System > About)
    • If you have a brand new Roku device, and haven't activated it yet, you can see the serial number and model at the back of the device or on the box that it came with.
  • Tracker ID: When the connection drops, press the Home button 5 times followed by the Back button 5 times quickly. This will generate a Tracker ID. Please provide this number if possible.

Software update failed error code 003

I have an older Roku stick that was never used. I tried to activate it and get error code 003 "Software update failed". I already reset the stick and my wifi router. I also tried 4 Internet connections (Videtron cable in home and office, DSL and a mobile hotspot connection). I even tried to switch the update server in the secret menu but it's stuck on "release".

This is a Roku streaming stick
