Re: Getting error HDCP 2.2 in Roku Ultra

Jump to solution

I've completely given up.

I had a BBB complaint in for months with extensive documentation attached (including what I could capture from the thread Roku deleted, etc).  Roku would repeatedly reply that they were working on the solution, or preparing to refund me, or something else.  Then they'd ghost me.  And I'd reject their response when they didn't respond.  To which they would reply again with more promises (to keep the complaint from being closed finding them at fault) and just keep the cycle going.

Be warned, Roku knows how to play the game. The final round they promised to get back with me in a certain amount of time, I missed the window to reject their response after they ghosted me, BBB closed the complaint due to "lack of consumer response" and now BBB will not answer emails instructing them to reopen it.

I was going to do small claims, but I'd have to file in the jurisdiction of Roku HQ, and it will cost me more to do that than to just move on.  I think Roku knows this too.

The amount of bad faith on Roku's part on all this is just incredibly disappointing.  All I can do from here is to leave accurate reviews on sites that sell Roku products, and inform everyone I know of what I experienced.  Needless to say,  we will never buy another Roku product ever again.

I purchased a Roku 4850X in December 2024 and just started the error this week (late March 2025).  Very frustrating.  I have upgraded hdmi cables as well.

Re: Getting error HDCP 2.2 in Roku Ultra

Hi, I purchased my Roku Ultra 4850X September 24, 2024. It worked perfectly until last weekend (April 4, 2025) never giving me any problems. Out of the blue the HDCP error message popped up on the screen. Not knowing about this issue first thing I did was take a brand new HDMI cable and swapped them out, Roku screen came back on with no message. Thinking it fixed, when I turned it on the next day there was the message again. Investigating I found this community post. I did try all the suggestions starting with the Roku initial message of things to do nothing has fixed the problem. I found by resetting the Roku it temporarily stopped the message. In the meantime as a test, I connected my older Roku 4670X and it has yet to show the message & its connected with all the same cables. It seems from reading the posts it's useless to contact Roku about this as it seems they're well aware of the problem.

Amazing that this is still an ongoing and common issue.

Roku continue to blame everything but their own product, even deleting threads that highlight the issues. The same old advice - new cables, new connections, new inputs...heck, the best line is 'Try another TV that supports HDCP, if possible.'. Despite the previous huge thread, with dozens of traces and so on where I called them out as having a hardware problem, we're still here trying to get a definitive solution, and failing.

I found the only true solution was to try another product. I haven't had a single HDCP error since reverting to my Chromecast with Google TV, or since I upgraded that to a Google Streamer in October. My ATV also works flawlessly. Clearly therefore, it must be my TVs, Cables and input selections...

My only real surprise is that this thread has lasted as long as it has.

@mikew_nt I'd love a link to your BBB complaint 🙂

You are all making far too much of this.
it’s not ROKU’s issue: it’s the HDMI CONSORTIUM’s Issue!

IN ORDER TO PUT AN HDMI LOGO ON A PRODUCT, MFG’s HAVE TO JOIN HDMI CONSORTIUM. AND LOAD CODE FOR COPY PROTECTION.  V2.2 for 4K PRODUCTS, V1.4 FOR HD PRODUCTS. SEE-IT IS OUT OF ROKU’S HANDS!  EVERY MFG HAS TO DO THIS TO PUT AN HDMI ON THEIR PRODUCT!!

HOW TO FIX THIS:  A PERFECT EXAMPLE OF THIS:

Say you own a Panasonic DOLBY Receiver, and it only has 1 HDCP V2.2 inputs.     AND.  you have multiple HDCP 2.2 devices.  NOW OBVIOUSLY the HDCP V2.2 devices will fault on NON HDCP 2.2 inputs.   HOW TO FIX, and use that input anyway?

AN HDCP V2.2 HDMI SPLITTER.

Connect DEVICE NEEDING FIXING TO INPUT: AND DISPLAY TO OUTPUT  DONE!  PROBLEM SOLVED!

IT SATISFIES HDCP ISSUES ALTOGETHER, and, FEEDS THE DISPLAY FLAWLESSLY!  FIXES EVEN DISPLAYS THAT CAN DO 4K BUT ARE NOT HDCP V2.2!!!

ABSOLUTELY NO PROBLEMS WHATSOEVER ON HARDWARE THAT IS NOT HDCP 2.2 COMPATIBLE!

NOW WHAT MOST ARE SEEING IS AN OCCASIONAL BURP:  AND CODE IS WRITTEN TO PROTECT THE CONTENT.

SO, TO FIX RANDOM TRIPS, BURPS, OR, WHATEVER YOU EANT TO CALL THIS DISPLAY OF HDCP V2.2 protections:

BUY A HDCP V2.2 HDMI SPLITTER!!

DONE!

  1. I shouldn't have to buy another product to make Roku's product work.
  2. No one else's product has this issue (at least not to the extent Roku seems to).
  3. Other products from Roku do not have this problem.

Bypassing HDCP by using a splitter (which is what you are essentially advocating) is not 'fixing' the issue that is inherent to the Roku devices.

My HDCP 2.2 Compliant Samsung TV should have no issue when directly connected to my supposedly HDCP 2.2 compliant Roku device, via a brand new cable provided by Roku in their package.  The same TV and cable have worked flawlessly for 6 months while connected to a different streaming device. Ergo, the issue is with the Roku box and how it handles HDCP handshaking. That should be fixed by Roku, not by me purchasing a device to bypass the HDCP functionality itself.

  • Go ahead and fight the issue by yourself.

I told you how to fix it!

I’m not having any issues since the HDCP V2.2  splitter fix on Roku Ultra 4K. Or Panasonic DOLBY RECEIVER (Fixed BOTH! That was me, too!) This issue is not just ROKU related   Their head in sand approach to pretty much everything is not user friendly, but I’m not a owner, so I can’t change that   But it’s not just Roku, it’s Anything with an HDMI INPUT Or OUTPUT and MEDIA THAT INITIATES THE HDCP 2.2 COMMUNICATIONS!  Note: ITS THE MEDIA THAT STARTS THE COMMUNICATIONS,  NOT ROKU  ROKU JUST HAS TO PASS IT  AS DOES ANY OTHER DEVICE AND/OR TV AFTER IT !

In 2005, I encountered the same issue with Blue Ray and HDCP V1.4 at HD Resolution's  at Network Television Stations.  The Fix took longer, then, as I didn’t understand HDCP Then!   This time I just had to find a new Splitter, as my 1.4 one did not help   I tried it!  But once an understood a V2.2 splitter was available, I just assumed it would work, based upon the 2005 HD issue.  I DID WORK!  Next!!😎😇😁

I now have 2x splitters: one HDCP V1.4, Good for HD, and one HDCP V2.2, Good for 4K.
IT’S NOT S LOOSE CONNECTION  ITS NOT THE HDMI CANLE (even my oldest one passes 4K & HDCP V2.2 communications!)  I HONESTLY I DONT  KNOW HOW THE CONSORTIUM CAN GET AWAY WITH DISPLAYING THOSE THINGS — TO SEND YOU ON A WILD GOOSE CHASE???????   🤬

Splitter can fix it, and did so: So I have moved on!

So; Your options would seem to be:

1. Continue on, generating frustration and stomach acid…….
Or:

2.  Fix the problem - and move on!

There will always be something new to fix!  Fix this and be done with it, so you can prepare for whatever is next!

The choice is yours!

PS:  I’m an end user.  I just have a history of fixing things at a greater depth than the normal end user would

GOOD LUCK SIR!  JanJ

I fixed the problem. I bought a Google Streamer.

This 'issue' has been going on for years. The fact that the solution is to add hardware to block the Roku from having to deal with any events, just proves the point that I and many others have detailed multiple times before - the issue is with how the Roku handles things....everyone else somehow seems to be able to manage without extra third-party addons.
