You will need a remote, being an express and that it takes IR remote you don't need a true roku remote, and cheap universal remote with roku listed will do. Go to the dollar store or target and a cheap universal remote.

Hi, 2qf89r016040 serial number on an old Roku box. My Internet cable is on the other side of the room from TV to connect the HDMI at the same time to the roku. I don't have a remote but have downloaded the roku remote app. Unable to 'Connect to a Device'. What now?

Nothing, you need a remote!! Once the roku is set to the same network and password as your cellphone then you can use the cellphone app. Can't be done initially without a remote.

Nope. I now have the hdmi - hdmi cable and will see about it when I have time. It did ask me to connect to my internet I just can't enter the password - yet!

Your first response in this thread is on page 2, your second on page 8? As told you before you will need a real remote initially before you can use the cellphone app.

@Writethisd0wn, you have to give more information.  What's the model number of your Roku?  What remote did you get?  Does the remote do anything?  Can't what????
