Jump to solution

I some how hit a wrong button that turned on the "voice over", and can't find the way to turn it off.

Hi @Nextone,

A warm welcome to the Roku Community!

We understand that you want to turn off your voice description. We're glad to assist you with your concern.

  • Note: The screen reader was previously known as the Audio Guide.

You can customize your screen reader experience by going to Settings, then Accessibility, and then Screen Reader. The various configurations available to you are as follows:

Screen reader on/off:

  • Turn the screen reader on or off. This is the same as pressing Star four times.

Shortcut:

  • Speech rate allows you to customize the speed at which the screen reader reads out text. There are four speech rate settings – Slow, Normal, Fast, and Very Fast. When you navigate to a particular setting, the screen reader gives you a sample of how it sounds at that speed. To select a specific speech rate, you must press OK on your Roku remote.

For full information on this, you can take a look at this link: How to enable the text-to-speech screen reader on your Roku® streaming device | Official Roku Suppor...

We hope this helps! We'll be here if you need anything else.

All the best,

Chel

Re: How to turn off voice description setting on Roku

@Nextone-

There are two separate systems that can produce voices overlaying the audio.

Voice announcement of Roku menus, button presses, etc.
A feature called Screen Reader announces where you are in the Roku menus for the benefit of the visually impaired. At some point you may have hit the * key on your Roku remote four times in a short period of time. This is a shortcut that toggles the Screen Reader feature on and off, so four quick presses of the * key should toggle the feature back off.

To deactivate the four-* trigger shortcut altogether use menu path Settings > Accessibility > Shortcut (in the Screen Reader section) > Disabled

(Aside to @RokuJechealR: Audio Guide was renamed to Screen Reader in Roku 10.5.)

Wrong language or verbal description of action on screen when watching program
Some programs contain multiple audio tracks that can be selected, such as different languages or verbal action descriptions for the visually impaired.

The Roku default method of accessing your choice of audio track is to press the * key on your Roku remote while viewing the program and examining the options presented.

But more and more channels are not using the Roku default but instead are substituting their own method of access -- I'm guessing this is so they will have consistent controls with versions of their app running on platforms other than Roku. Often these options are accessed by pressing the up and/or down cursor control keys while viewing the program to pop the channel's own control options on the screen.

I still cannot turn off the Audio. Descriptions that tell me the Volume settings. From the Accessibility window I have  Screen Reader Disabled, and have disabled the four "*" shortcut. I have turned both of these on and off and turned on and off the TV and Roku and nothing stops the Audio Volume description.

@Rowan42 are you certain the audio description is coming from the Roku? Does your TV offer a voice guide that might be stating that? The reason I ask is that the Roku doesn't know the volume level setting to announce it. It might say "volume up" but wouldn't know the actual setting. Exactly what is the voice saying?
