Roku Turning TV On Randomly

Jump to solution

I'm dealing with the same (having to unplug the Roku or deal with the TV coming on randomly throughout the day. This is a problem with my newer Roku device, which I purchased after my last Roku device continually posted an on-screen message that it was overheating. It would be really nice to have one that simply works the way its supposed to.  Please figure out the issue, Roku!

The Roku player never turns off, unless you are unplugging or otherwise removing power. If you simply turn the TV off while the Roku is streaming, the Roku does not automatically stop. The streaming content can turn your TV back on (it's something that can happen via the CEC protocol). So by always going to the home screen you stop any streaming and the Roku won't send a signal to the TV to power back on.

Hi @arie_b_04,

Welcome to the Roku Community!

I understand that your Roku TV volume is always stuck at 44 levels. I'll be glad to assist you with this. I highly suggest you try the following.

Reset your TV audio:

  1. Press the Home button on your Roku remote
  2. Scroll down and select Settings
  3. Select System
  4. Select Advance System settings
  5. Under factory reset, Select Reset TV audio/picture settings.

Note: Please make sure not to select the "factory reset everything" option. This selection will delete all of your apps.

System restarts the Roku TV:

  1. Press Home  on your Roku remote
  2. Scroll and select Settings
  3. Select System
  4. Select Power. If you do not see a Power submenu, skip to the next step.
  5. Select System restart

For reference, you can visit our support article: How to system restart your Roku streaming device

Please keep us posted.

Regards,
Riamie

Hi @IMBatman2,

Greetings from the Roku Community!

We appreciate you letting us know about your Roku device that randomly turns on. We'd like to know more about it so we can further assist you. Are you making sure you're back on the home screen after finishing what you're watching to secure the Roku device that is no longer streaming? Furthermore, are you keeping your physical remote out of reach, and do you have a Roku mobile app?

Please make sure that you go back to Home after streaming. Your physical remote should also be out of reach to prevent anyone from accidentally touching the buttons to turn it on, and if you have a Roku mobile app, please ensure that it is closed to avoid it from unintentionally turning on your Roku device.

Kindly keep us informed, and we will be here to help you.

Kind regards,
Eunice

I am having the same issue with my 24" Insignia Roku TV. Yes, I return to Home before powering it off on the remote. I do not have any Roku apps on any of my devices, and the remote for the TV is well out of reach. I did a factory reset of the entire system. Still happening.

This has only been happening since the beginning of this year (2024). Perhaps an update to the system has a "Bug"?

Same issue here. Started June 30th. Powers up randomly. When I come home from work every day it's on. Turned on in the middle of the night last night???

Unfortunately, going to the Home screen like Dan suggested does not resolve the issue.  I just set up a new Samsung 2024 43" DU8000 series TV and the only way to stop the TV from turning back on regardless of where I left it was to disable the anywhere+ (I think that is what they called it) in the Samsung connect menu.  What was even weirder was that when going to the home screen, pressing the power button on either the Roku or the Samsung remote, the TV would turn off and about 20 seconds later turn back on and go into the Roku Channel and started playing a show that my in-laws have never watched.  The TV and Roku were both up to date on the firmware. The developers of the firmware need to acquire a new Samsung TV and figure out why it is sending stuff to the TV stuff when it shouldn’t be.

Samsung Anynet+ is the word they use to describe the CEC functionality. That will certainly stop any connected device from turning the TV back on, but you do lose some functionality without it on. Most likely it won't be anything that really bothers you, so if that does the trick that's fine to leave that way.

Have same problem with TV turning back on after a few second. I can go to Home screen and turn off 4 or more time holding power button for around 3 seconds and it will eventually stay off. Very frustrating. Any suggestions?

Re: Roku Turning TV On Randomly

I had a Samsung BD player that caused the same problem. The only solution is to disable the CEC functionality between the devices. In Roku it's called 1-Touch Play. Your TV might have a name that doesn't even resemble CEC. Samsung calls it Anynet. LG calls it Simplink. Every manufacturer has a different name for it.
