I received Roku for Christmas; I went to hook it up to watch free channels; and find it wants my credit card; which won't charge unless i purchase but will charge $1. and disappear. What; it is in the box to be returned; no where does it say on the package that the ROKU DOESN'T WORK UNLESS YOU GIVE THEM YOUR CREDIT CARD FOR FREE CHANNELS! I think the LAW need involved with this company; disgusting and no customer service phone number or persons

A credit card isn't required, but they don't make that obvious. There should be a "skip this" button when you get that step or you can create an account using this link: https://my.roku.com/signup/nocc
You can also remove the payment method at any time if you entered it as long as you don't have any active subscriptions through Roku.
I didn’t enter my credit card for the first 3/4 years of having a Roku player. You might have to take a minute to look, but there is definitely an option like the other responder said where you don’t have to. I also just got my parents a Roku TV and they are loving all the free channels including the Roku channel and their credit card information is not in the system. There may be a prompt where it asked you to, but just know you do not have to. Hope that helps ease some frustration
I don't like providing my credit card number to Roku or when I requested via my Roku account to activate my PBS channel to my location. If it is FREE, then the SKIP notice was not very obvious. I find this tactic deceitful and troublesome. I should only be asked to provide the credit card number when I make a purchase.

I would like to skip the payment method during setup but can’t see where to do it.
@DeeStew, try this link: https://my.roku.com/signup/nocc
It is not a legitimate answer to say "go and delete your credit card info" which presumes that I want to input my credit card info in the first place. I do not find on this page:
