After 12/8/22 System Update, no apps will open

Model Roku Ultra (4660, 4661, 4662 series) (4660X)

Software version 11.5.0Build 4235-46

Following a 12/8/22 update, no used apps will load (Netflix, Amazon Prime, Disney+, YouTube).  Apps are there, but when accessed they just continuously buffer. Netflix freezes at 25%. Disney+ renders a "malformed data" error.

I've performed the following:

Removed power

Restarted

Factory reset

Removed and reinstalled apps

Cleared cache

All have been attempted multiple times.

Connectivity is Excellent and no devices in house connected to WiFi are experiencing any connection issues. Cable tv service has no issues, no internet issues.

Unsure of what to try next.

  • Same issue. Streaming channels won’t load along with Roku TV.

    1. Roku device model: 5216X-Roku TV; Serial number: 2N00GD710730; Device ID: 74463G710730; Software OS/version: 11.5.0 build 4312-25
    2. Does this issue occur on a specific channel? It happens on all channels.
    3. Tracker ID: 30-495-883
    4. Steps to reproduce the issue you are seeing: hard start tv; removed and reinstalled all apps; restarted router; factory reset tv
  • I am also having the same issue with the latest update. All apps only buffer (except Netflix) and screen mirroring also doesn't work (which means I can't even run the apps on a different device and cast them to the TV). So this update has completely bricked my TV. Have tried all the steps of the above user.

    Please advise.

Edit 2022-12-12. Based on Dannys message. Apps that are not working:

Tubi version 2.19 build 3. App opens, selecting any shows fails when trying to load ads before show begins.

Roku version 8.0 build 72. App opens, selecting any shows stuck on buffering 0%...you guys broke your own **bleep** app...

Disney+ Version 1.29 build 2022120800. App opens, selecting any shows stuck on buffering at 0%.

Crave version 1.0 build 5. App opens, selecting any shows yields error: "Something went wrong failed to create media player"

Hayu version 3.2 build 0 . App opens. Fails on loading ads when selecting a show. Throws error "Sorry, something went wrong! 5999_0001_0000"

FuboTV version 4.8 build 2500. Apps opens. selecting any shows, stuck on buffering at 0%.

    Apps that are working

    Prime Video

    Netflix

    EDIT 2022-12-16

Based on Danny's message that a patch has been pushed, I installed the most recent update and restarted my TV (from the power menu). The issue (as other users have mentioned) has still not been resolved. The apps that didn't work previously still don't work, and screen mirroring as well still doesn't work. My TV remains a paper weight...

    FINAL EDIT (I hope) 2022-17-12

Tried my TV this morning, and everything is now working.

  • I am also not able to open any apps on my TV. I also cannot select any inputs either (ie changing HDMI from 1 to 2)

  • I have done the same thing for my roku TV.

I do find it interesting that when I tested out my old roku stick on my TV, all my apps work just fine.

I bought the stick because the wifi connection went out on a now 8 year old Samsung TV.

It's like the TV update is screwing with the apps.

I was able to miraculously use Amazon and Plex, but everything else I get strange error codes on the TV.

    Hi Community users,

    Thanks for the posts.

In order to prevent confusion of multiple issues in this thread, can you please provide us the following information:

    • Roku device model, serial number, device ID, and software OS/version (these can all be found in Settings > System > About)
    • does this issue occur on a specific channel? if so, what channel and what version/build is the channel (this can be found be selecting the channel on the Home screen and pressing the * button)
    • tracker ID when this issue occurs (when you see this issue occur, press the Home button 5 times, followed by the Back button 5 times and provide us with this ID)
    • steps to reproduce the issue you are seeing
    • what is happening on screen when this issue occurs

Once we have this information, we will be able to investigate the issue further.

    Thanks,
    Danny

A week after a whole community of Roku TV users lost ability to download any content, what is Roku doing?

Obviously the December software update corrupted our Roku devices.  Don't think I believe this issue only effects a few people.

If Roku can't fix it, broadcast an update that reverts back to the working software version.

Please explain what's the delay for a fix?

        Hi everyone,

Thanks for your patience regarding playback issues.

We believe this issue is now resolved. We would recommend checking for an OS update and then seeing if you are still experiencing an issue.

For more information about how to check for a manual update, visit our Support page here: Update the software on your streaming devices

Please keep us posted what you find out.

        Thanks,
        Danny

For the past few days, I have started having issues with channels NOT working. At first, it seemed to be mostly the Roku Channel and a few lesser known channels. I thought it was just me. I had tried restarting the TV from the "System" menu. I tried uninstalling and reinstalling the channels. I even tried rebooting my internet modem, the wifi router, and my Roku TV again. Still nothing.

Then I found on Reddit several threads where a lot of other people were having the same issue, with a bunch of different channels not working for them. So, I found out I am far from the only one having this issue.

As of this evening, I went through EVERY channel on my Roku TV. he ONLY channels working completely for me are Netflix, PrimeTV, and Youtube.

Every other channel, the channel loads, will show you the shows/movies/clips/livestreams available, but when you try to play it, you either get an error from the platform (Disney+ says "Something went wrong", Hulu gives a "We are having trouble playing this", etc) OR it does the little loading/buffering circle and never leaves 0%.

I tried contacting someone through Roku's Support Chat, and after telling the chat person I was not the only one having issues, and even linked them to one of the Reddit threads talking about it, and mentioned that if I was not the only one having the issue, this was not my TV's issue, but a Roku issue...he said he was going to transfer me. He exited chat, and then it put him back in. I asked him how long it would be until transferred, as I take care of my father and needed to tend to him soon. He was not sure. When I asked him why this is not something Roku saw as an important thing to address soon, as it effects many people, was already being talked about publicly, and could cause loss of profit...he left and ended the chat.

I do not know about everyone else effected...but personally, I only have Roku TVs in my house, have highly recommended Roku to others, and up to this point would have ONLY bought a Roku TV if I needed another TV. But if this cannot be fixed, I will have to go buy a non Roku TV, and would no longer recommend them. Also, up until this issue, I was planning on getting my Dad a subscription to "The Great Courses" through Roku for Christmas...but what would be the point if I cannot even access anything on the Roku TV except Netflix, PrimeTV, and Youtube?

Why is Roku keep ignoring this like the support people keep telling me it's a connectivity issue and it's not if that's the case the apps wouldn't work on my other tvs

I have the exact same issue on an Insignia Roku 39".  Apps open, but won't play anything since the update.

Same issue no channels stream. Can see everything up to the point of play. Once I press play on any show I just get spinning icon. Tried all of the same solutions (power, reset, factory reset, etc)

    Local antenna channels still work.

Attached Google Chromecast device still works.

    • That is the same case with me as I've Fibre connection which is too fast still apps such as Foxi are not opening should I reinstall.

    Hi Community users,

Thanks for the posts and updates.

At this time, we would recommend trying to reboot your Roku device and seeing if the issue is continuing to occur. You can reboot your Roku device through Settings > System > System restart or by unplugging your Roku device and plugging it back in.

Please keep us posted what you find out and we will be able to investigate the issue you are experiencing further.

    Thanks,
    Danny

ROKU television is currently working although I do have periods of the system asking for my password.  I just hit home and then try again.  The second try is usually successful.

  • No app works on my Roku TV.  Netflix, Roku TV, Crackle, Hulu….nothing.  Just get “Can’t run channel” and to check my network connection.  Network connects and checks good.  I’ve tried everything:  System updates, factory reset, unplugging tv, removing channels.

I was checking this morning about 11:30 to see if anything had been resolved. I ran update and nothing had changed. Still 11.0.0 Build 4193-13. About an hour later I attempted to add a app and It downloaded and ran! No error message. Encouraged by this I went to an app that had already been previously working. It downloaded and ran!

So whatever had been preventing apps to download and run has been apparently sorted out....
