Streaming stick needs reactivating every time, broken or rubbish?

Jump to solution

My issue seems to be shared with many others, but those solutions haven't worked for me.  I have a new streaming stick 4k, bought to replace a fire stick which had become buggy, which I intend to use on holidays and on different tv's so it can't be constantly powered.

Everytime it powers on it cannot find the remote, and the only way to get it to connect seems to be a reset which means having to re-enter the WiFi password, email address then getting a new code to activate it with.

I connect using the provided lead and adapter and have tried the remote on the app but as the stick loses connection this doesn't work either. I had wanted to use this the way I used my fire stick, with a usb full of films connected via an OTG adapter, but as soon as I plug this in it can't detect that the provided lead is being used so this unfortunately isn't going to work, unless others have found a way around?

I can't believe that losing all settings as soon as the power is as designed, so is it likely this is a defective unit?

OK, I am answering my own post so it can act as a solution for others with the same issue.  I gave up on the streaming stick and exchanged it for a basic express.  This instantly connected and retained settings when turned off, so acted just as expected.

As a bonus, because it doesn't search for the WiFi enhancer it allows my to use a simple otg plug in to play films from usb and is less finicky about not having a WiFi connection than my Firestick.  I can't control the TV with the simple remote but I am now happy with the purchase.

Good luck to all others struggling with these.

I've never heard of anyone using an OTG adapter and I don't think it will recognize any connected drive, but it shouldn't be losing its setup no matter how long it's not powered.  The model number of the stick might help, but is this one that came with a USB cable with a "bump" in it?  If so, that's the Wi-Fi adapter and the remote won't work without that cable.  Just making sure you're not trying to use the OTG adapter without the original USB cable if it's one with the Wi-Fi adapter.

Thanks renojlm, it is a model 3820X2 and it does have the 'bump' which is the cable used. I was hoping for the same offline use as the firestick, but no issue - if I get this working it can stay on the home TV and I will take the firestick on holiday!

Do you know any way of playing movies copied from home collection dvds through the stick whilst offline?

No, I don't.  The stick requires a network connection to do much of anything and more and more Roku devices seem to complain if they don't have an Internet connection.  Only the Ultra and the Streambar have a USB port for connecting a drive, but even with them you might have a problem without an Internet connection.  I recall posts from people that have put Roku devices in a car to play movies from a flash drive that have had issues, but I can't say that I've ever tried it.
