Roku never announces when a new product might available. WIFI 7 devices require a WIFI 7 router too.

Samsung has been pushing 8k. I have a samsung galaxy s21 that is 8k video recording capability. But, my default is set to 2k. Samsung does have an 8k TV that is the smallest 8k TV 55 inches. The Samsung Galaxy s24 is supposed to come with wifi 7. I have a wifi 6 router that is 3 years old. I am in no rush to get a wifi 7 router at this time.

I’m not aware of Roku having Wi-Fi 6 yet (2019) or gigabit ethernet (1999).  And they don’t announce stuff until they’re ready. So, I guess we’ll know, when we know.

Banned but back. Because why not?

Re: Future units utilizing WiFi 7

Since they haven't added WiFi 6 support yet, 7 is probably years away. You are absolutely an early adopter, since few people have more than Gigabit at home. Most homes rely completely on WiFi, although I'm in agreement with you that wired is the way to go for most devices.

All that said, you are forgetting the purpose of a Roku device. Their primary use is for streaming from the Internet, and so far there's practically no online content that needs more than maybe 25 Mbps. Those of us that have home media servers have asked for Gigabit Ethernet for years with no response from Roku. And even using 5 GHz 802.11ac the highest speed I can get on my Ultra 4800 is around 230 Mbps. Even playing a video via USB, so no network bottleneck at all, I can't play a 250 Mbps test file without buffering. The Roku hardware simply can't handle video content much over 200 Mbps, so there's no real benefit to a faster network connection.

I have no doubt that some day in the future Roku will announce a device capable of 8K (I think there might be a couple of Roku TVs that do now), but since there's no content available yet, I don't think an 8K player is in the cards for a few years yet. We've pretty much passed the usual window for any new announcements this year. And until that content is available, we don't really know what sort of network speed is going to be needed to stream at that level. Netflix can sustain a 4K video at 10 Mbps, so it's entirely possible/likely that 8K still won't exceed Fast Ethernet speeds.

Microsoft Xbox series 1 does come with 8k video. There are a lot of different apps available for the Xbox besides games. But, you need to buy an 8k TV for the Xbox. The Xbox series 1 does have wireless AC and gigabit ethernet.

Yes, but other than a handful of game titles, what native 8K material is available? An 8K player with an 8K display still doesn't have any native 8K material. I'm sure upscaled 4K looks fantastic on such a display. But we're still a long ways off for any significant amount of streaming 8K material.

I guess if one lives in Japan, there's native 8K broadcast material. Not so sure I want to watch a sumo match in 8K 😄

Should add that WiFi 7 (802.11be) is NOT finalized yet. That is due sometime early next year. Not even sure if there are any devices that really support it yet. And if so, there is always the possibility that they may not be compatible with the final specs, or not take full advantage of all features.

Roku is entry-level consumer products. They are also based on chipsets by 3rd parties, mostly RealTek right now. Until there is a chipset with WiFi7 support, don't expect it in a Roku at all.
