Can a Roku connect through a Scaler?

I am Mike and I work at a church. we have a video system that uses HDMI input plugs on different walls. These are routed to an extron scaler when then directs the input to a projector. At times it works great. but other times the roku will not show up. I have tried restarting. starting up in a different sequence but I cannot figure out how to make sure the Roku will show every time. Is what I want to do possible or not?

Re: Can a Roku connect through a Scaler?

Hi @MIkePet,

Greetings from the Roku Community!

We'd love to further investigate this inquiry that you had. May we know what Roku device you are using right now? (Roku Express, Roku streaming stick, Roku Ultra, Roku streambar, Roku TV-Specify)

We'll wait for your response.

Thanks,                                                                                                                                              John

Re: Can a Roku connect through a Scaler?

The Roku we have purchased is a Roku Express 4K.  The Roku connects directly to an Extron IN1608 scaler with a HDMI cord.  It then is routed to an Extron DTP HDMI 230 Rx using twisted wire (Cat6sheilded).  The Extron DTP HDMI 230 Rx converts the signal back to HDMI and it goes into the projector.

Sometimes when I turn it on the Roku connects, we see the home screen and all is well. But the next time we connect there is nothing there and the Projector sees no signal.  The projector is always set for HDMI 1.  There are 6 connections includeding the Roku going into the Scaler.

I have tried leaving the Roku on and pressing home, then starting the system.  I have tried unplugging the Roku and then starting the system first. I have tried making sure the roku connection was the active input and then starting the system with the Roku on.

Because it sometimes work and sometimes does not I feel it is a timing issue with the system but cannot find a way to have reliability.  The Reliability is very important.

Re: Can a Roku connect through a Scaler?

If your scaler is simply acting as an HDMI switcher, there should be no issues. But if the scaler is altering things like resolution, refresh rate, or other output changes, that could be where the problem lies. Your Express 4K can only output 720p, 1080p or 2160p (4k). If the scaler is not looking for the correct resolution settings that could cause you to lose HDMI sync. You might first check your scaler input settings for the port being used by the Roku and see if there's a passthrough setting.
