Roku main menu doesn’t come up automatically when I turn on TV

Jump to solution

When I turn on my LG tv with my Tv remote my Roku menu doesn’t pop up anymore. Now the LG menu comes up and I have to hit exit on the LG remote in order for the Roku main menu to come up.  Before when I turned on the TV the Roku menu would come up automatically. Any help to fix this??

Hi @Loriab72,

Thanks for the first post in the Roku Community!

We understand that you are having trouble with your Roku device because the main menu doesn't come up automatically. Can you check if the HDMI cables are firmly connected?

These are the most common reasons you may not see the picture on your TV:

You have the wrong input (source) selected on your TV.

  • This is extremely common and an easy mistake to make. Most TV has several video inputs on the back or side of the TV that is used for connecting different devices such as a cable box, gaming console, and of course, Roku player. You must select the input (sometimes referred to as source) that matches the one to which you have the Roku player connected. Look to see which input you have the Roku player connected to; the video connector will be labeled with the input name; e.g. HDMI 1, HDMI 2, AUX, VIDEO IN 1, etc.

The video cable is not connected properly or the cable is faulty.

  • Check that the video cable is firmly connected to the back of your Roku player and the HDMI or composite connector on the TV. If you have a Roku Streaming Stick, then make sure it is firmly connected to the HDMI connector on your TV.
  • If you can, check to see if you have a faulty cable by connecting your Roku player with a different cable.

There is a problem with the TV.

  • If you can, try connecting the Roku player to a different input on the TV to see if the problem is with the connector on the TV.
  • If you can, try connecting the Roku player to a different television to see if the problem is with your Roku player or the TV.

Enable CEC or disable auto power savings.

  • If you do not see a picture after pressing a button on your Roku remote, it is possible that your player cannot "wake up" your TV over the HDMI connection. To fix this, make sure that HDMI-CEC is enabled on your TV. If you prefer your player never to enter the low power mode, you can disable auto power savings.

Greeting @Loriab72

Welcome to the Roku Community and thanks for posting regarding your inquiry.

Couple of questions regarding what you are experiencing:

  • What model Roku device are you using?
  • How are you powering the Roku device? Is the device plugged into the TV USB port or is it plugged into a wall outlet?
  • When you are done streaming for the day, is the last thing you've watch on the Roku device?

With more detailed information, we will be able to assist you further. We look forward to hearing back from you.

Thanks,
Danny

I have a Roku Premiere

The power cord is plugged from back of Roku device to the wall. I have a HDMi cable that goes from back of TV port into the back of the Roku device.

I watch everything from the apps I’ve installed on the Roku main menu so it’s the Roku that I am watching last streaming.

The Roku menu has always come up first when I turn on TV. You would see the ROKU bounce up and down and then go to menu. Now the LG tv main menu comes up first. I’m not sure what happened to change this. Any help would be appreciated.

I am not having a problem with the picture at all. The problem is the Roku menu doesn’t come up automatically when I turn on tv. It goes to the LG menu and I have to the exit button on LG remote and then the Roku menu comes up. The Roku menu used to come up automatically when I would turn TV on but now it doesn’t. How can I fix this. ?

@Loriab72, it sounds like you need to set the "default input" on your TV using its settings.

Same exact issue!! I hit power on the Roku remote and the tv comes on. It used to open up to the Roku menu but now it doesn’t and I have to find my LG remote, hit exit and then the Roku menu and remote can be used.

Were you able to fix your issue @Loriab72 ?

@Rbfleisch What happens if you hit the home button on the Roku remote instead of using the power button?  Does the TV come on?

@Rbfleisch If my home button suggestion doesn't work try going into settings on the LG TV and see if you can have it start on the HDMI input the Roku is attached to.  I believe your problem is related to an update on the LG TV and not Roku.  I have a friend with an LG TV connected to a cable box and he had the same issue.  LG defaulted to starting on LG Smart interface.

definitely not a Roku problem. I never had a problem with the Roku menu automatically coming up when turning on the tv till there was an update to the LG tv.
