Roku Setup and Basement and Home Theater

Jump to solution

Hello,

I have a home theater with the AV processor and receiver in the basement. The den contains a 10 year old Sharp TV with mounted surround sound speakers and a subwoofer. A Logitech remote communicates with a IR device in the basement via RF. The IR device then communicates with the equipment.

I am planning to switch from DirecTv to Youtube TV and am planning on purchasing a Roku streaming device. Would I be able to place the Roku in the basement and communicate with it via my remote? Which streaming device would work with my system? Would there be any additional setup needed?

Thank you

Hi @arosner,

Thank you for your first post here in the Roku Community!

We will be more than happy to assist you further with your inquiry.

Please be advised that the Logitech Harmony remote cannot control the Roku Streaming Stick because it does not have infrared (IR) capabilities. However, you can use the Harmony Hub to control Roku devices through your home's network.

All the movies and TV shows accessible through your Roku streaming player are available in stereo; however, some are also available in surround sound. Although most Roku streaming players do not decode surround sound formats such as Dolby Digital Plus or DTS, they can pass through the signal to an audio/video receiver (AVR), soundbar, or TV capable of decoding surround sound.

  • Note:
    • Surround sound pass-through is only available when your Roku streaming player is connected via HDMI or optical (when available).
    • Although some Roku players can decode Dolby Digital, the audio will be output in stereo unless your player is connected to an AVR or soundbar as described in this article.

You may check out this support article here on how to set up your Roku streaming player for surround sound.

We hope you'll find this information useful. Please keep us posted if there's anything else we can do to assist you.

All the best,
John
