I have a JVC XV-THG41 DVD Receiver and a TCL Roku TV and cannot get my surround system to work? I have my HDMI cord in port 2 and HDMI Out on the receiver and all my speakers are correctly hooked up. I've tried to hookup an HDMI audio in from the TV to DVD receiver...to no avail! Can someone tell me how to properly input on the Roku Menu screen? I cannot figure it out and have searched, endlessly, online and cannot find out how? Thanks for your valuable time.
Does the TV have an HDMI port labeled ARC? That is normally the audio receiving channel.
Here are the instructions for the JVC receiver that I think you are referring; page 10 starts with the instruction for HDMI.
To set up surround sound on a TCL TV, connect your surround sound system (typically a soundbar with surround speakers) to the TV using an HDMI cable with ARC (Audio Return Channel) functionality (if the TV has an Arc HDMI port), then navigate to your TV's settings menu, select "Sound" or "Audio Output," and choose the appropriate audio output option to send sound to your surround system; you may also need to enable CEC (Consumer Electronics Control) on your TV to control the surround sound with your TV remote
Make sure your HDMI cable is a newer cable with ARC capabilities. If no Arc, you have to use the other options to connect.
I don't see ARC in the user manual @JWS9518 linked, so I'm not so sure that receiver has "ARC stuff". (The copyright date on that manual is the same year ARC was added to the HDMI spec.) I think the OP may have to use the Aux in or Optical in, and hopefully (probably) the TV has an out that matches one of those.
My A/V receiver also predates ARC, so I do: [all devices] -> [receiver] -> TV & speakers. This works for me because I don't use any TV-supplied content. That is, my Roku is a separate player so it is one of those [all devices].
@Strega2 Makes a good point, I am assuming that the receiver is Arc capable. Otherwise, the setup is going to rely on other connections.
