I am seeing what appears to be conflicting product descriptions. On the one hand, one place on the Roku site seems to say that only the Streambars support private listening, while another place seems to say that all of them, even the cheap Express, do so if you have the Roku app on your phone. Which is it?

It depends what you want to use for your private listening.
Only a few Rokus are capable of connecting Bluetooth listening devices directly. They currently are:
- Roku Streambar®
- Roku Streambar Pro
- Roku Smart Soundbar
- Roku Ultra (models 4800 and 4802)
- Roku Ultra LT (model 4801)
- Roku Plus Series TV
Of the current product line, the remote for the Roku Streambar Pro includes an earphone jack for private listening. The Roku Streaming Stick 4k+ and the Roku Ultra come with the Voice Remote Pro, which has an earphone jack for private listening and is rechargeable.
And all Rokus of recent years can use the Voice Remote Pro as an add-on.
Finally, all Rokus of recent years can use the Roku Remote app on iOS or Android mobile devices. One of the features of this app is remote listening, through the device's own speaker or any listening devices connected to the phone or tablet.

Hi @DeanAK,
Warm greetings from the Roku Community!
We're sorry for the confusion here. Yes, private listening is available on any Roku device. For Roku Streambar specifications, private listening is only supported when using its built-in streaming player. Private listening is not supported on this product when using an external device such as a game console, Blu-rayTM player, or cable/satellite set-top box, or when using a Bluetooth device such as a smartphone or computer.
For more information about this, you can visit our support page here: How to use headphones with the Roku® mobile app for private listening
I hope this helps!
Thanks,
Rey
