How well does an early generation Apple or IBM PC work these days?
But I agree, to a point. I'd prefer an obsolete model to gracefully exit the update process if it can't be updated, leaving its end-of-life software version intact.

I don't think I've ever bought a bowl with terms and conditions that included: "From time to time, the software installed on your device will require an update or a content provider may update their software application that you use to access their content (their channel app) on your Roku device. Updates include things like bug fixes, improvements to the user interface or how you access content, for security purposes, and other changes that may add, change, or remove certain features and functionality. These updates happen automatically via the internet (data charges may apply)"
So, we were warned. Not that I'm saying it's not fair to be annoyed. But I don't think an internet-connected device is remotely analogous to a bowl.
By the way, my guess is that this was totally unintentional - even though they claim they can remove functionality, I don't think that was their intent in this case. Roku has goofed up before... I've seen a few other posts about messed up home pages since they put out the Roku Rewind thing. I suspect they're not all old Rokus, but most people haven't mentioned model numbers.
@user54321 , my 4630 just did the same thing. I don't think it's any coincidence that it started when something about "Food" was added to the Home Screen left menu. Thankfully hiding it restored normal operation. I wouldn't be surprised if we start hearing a lot more reports about this. I've already seen one from someone with another device that supposedly isn't receiving updates (I think it was a 2710), but the 4630 isn't one of those devices.
Same issue here on an Ultra 4k
Remove the Food item from Home screen and it works again.
Settings -> Home Screen -> <Item> -> Hide
... and so too it's impacting my Roku Soundbar - model 9101R2 - and really, the attitude here from both the 'expert' who's all 'you have old stuff - why would you expect it to work?' and also team Roku - though they threw a crumb of gratitude with a promo code - it's a bug when you can't use the product in a way it was intended to be used.
So let's go see if deleting something that was FORCED there by the company will fix their product. I mean, it's gonna be super easy to go Google TV on a new tv for the holidays if this is just 'how it is' - alas, end-stage capitalism kinda sucks. :ps:
On 12 Dec I experienced a new bug symptom on my Roku Stick 3500 where channels on the Live TV menu screen randomly timeout and returns to the Live TV menu screen while watching the channel's streaming content.
I would like the Roku company to stand by their products and fix their bugs before expecting customers to desire and purchase newer Roku devices with more features. I'm just asking for the features that I purchased to work.
Dear Roku Company,.
On 12 Dec, my 3500 Series Roku Stick now displays a Food menu item on the left menu column on the Home Screen. I still cannot navigate the channel app icons on the Home Screen. The Roku Channel graphic is missing from its square channel app icon and I cannot remove the defunct Crackle channel app icon from the Home Screen.
I can navigate on the Live TV Menu Screen but I also experienced random timeouts or system crashes back to the Live TV Menu Screen while streaming news content.
I also observed that the Home Screen shortcut where I unchecked TV Off, was checked ON by itself so the automatic Roku menu revision did an override of my own menu screen settings.
It appears that my Home Screen navigation problems began after the Roku Company modified the left column menu on the Home Screren starting with Roku Rewind menu addition.
Please restore the original factory left column menu on the Home Screen, regression test the fix on a 3500 serie Roku sstick (and all other Roku devices in the customer base) and issue an automatic software update to correct this problem across your customers' Roku devices. It is not appropriate to have a good working Roku device malfunction due to a defective software instruction and then expect a customer to trust the compasny and buy a newer device so the same scenario can force a purchase again in the future. I purchased multiple Roku devices when they were all working corectly because I had trust in the company. My trust is shaken when I am expected to replace my Rolku because an automatic menu update correupted my device.
I tried using the Roku Android app, a factory reset and a system restart. None of these attempts worked to resolve the issue.
I appreciate having a community bulletin board, but my technical issue would really be better served if the Roku Company provided a direct customer service point of contact.
I just want my Roku devices to work as I originally purchased them without malfunctioning due to erroneous instructions automatically downloaded from Roku.
Thank you for your kind consideration of my technical issues.
I'm having same issue. I've hidden the food thing and offers, but to no avail. It was bad enough the thing stopped my value subscriptions for several channels, like netflix and disney plus to stop working, but this is really annoying. If not fixed, I'll never spend another cent on Roku branded devices. My Express still works fine, but my 3500x is about worthless now.
Roku Company,
The left hand Home Screen Food menu item removed itself. I still cannot navigate channels on the Home Screen. I have a new symptom to report. The 3500 Roku Stick (that I Factory Reset to attempt a fix to the broken navigation functionality) occasionally displays an error message that it cannot modify a setting without specifying the setting that it wants to modify. I own multiple 3500 Roku sticks that cannot navigate the Home Screen since some instruction arrived from Roku ever since Roku Rewind was displayed on the lefthand Home Screen menu. Please send an update to fix the corrupted functionality.
Thank you for your kind attention.
