Replacement RF Remote that will work with Roku 2

I am looking for an RF replacement remote for a Roku 2 box that has gone to my inlaws. I know the box is old and no longer receives support, but it works for them, except it is hard for them to be able to get the IR remote included with it to catch the Roku IR sensor and change position.

What is the replacement remote that would give them RF support so it wouldn't be line of site dependent.

Thanks!

Re: Replacement RF Remote that will work with Roku 2

There have been several "Roku 2" models.  What's the model number displayed under Settings->System->About?  Some very old Roku 2 models were the only ones that used a Bluetooth remote, but they're probably not useful for anything anymore.

If it is a Roku 2 XS, then it uses Bluetooth and there's no replacement remote for it. But it does support IR, so that's your only replacement option.

If you must have an RF remote, your only option is a new Roku.

@billqs

Somehow this older remote GR-14 ended up in my Ebay recommendations. (auction item ending in 5 days, asking 99 cents w/ free shipping).

Roku GR-14 bluetooth remote for Roku2

According to a thread with @Tivoburkee , should work with Roku2 xs (3050) and xd (3100).

Not sure if worth the effort vs. buying a new device for the in-laws, but at least an option maybe if they have the above models. (can confirm from settings/system/about on the Roku device).

The guys already participating in this thread are much more knowledgeable about this device and their remotes than I am though so can offer better input.  Personally, I would probably just upgrade the Roku device.

Re: Replacement RF Remote that will work with Roku 2

I still have a 2 XS, but it's worthless for almost any streaming use today. It started crashing with YouTube when it was only a few years old, because Google programs their apps for the latest hardware and it becomes unusable on older devices. Even the newest version of Roku 2 is now over nine years old, and really can't keep up with the latest apps.

Re: Replacement RF Remote that will work with Roku 2

The Roku 2 is a model 4210x. The only way I knew an RF remote was possible was because Roku tried to up sale me on one back when the Roku 2 was a current product.

I appreciate the responses. I believe this was a late model Roku 2 because the 3 was already out. My inlaws only have a 1080p non-smart TV. I added an SD card to allow for more memory on the box.

As to why I just don't buy a new current player, you would need to understand the mentality of my inlaws. They don't give up on anything until they plug it in and it has died. They also don't understand technology but luckily the Roku ecosystem is pretty much the most intuitive I have used.

I'm with you on the advantages of the newer models. I use 2 Ultra's in my home theater and our family room.

Being the 4210 it uses wifi remotes like the current Rokus. You could go to Walmart for the $19.88 voice remote. Or the better rechargeable voice pro 2 for about $30.

Just so you know, that SD card only provides additional storage space for the apps/channels installed. It has nothing to do with the operational memory of the Roku.

Your version of the Roku 2 is still supported by Roku, but I expect it's getting close to being dropped to legacy status. When that happens, it's possible that many providers will no longer support it. The most comparable Roku sold today to yours is the Roku Express (3960), but not any of the older versions of Express. But it doesn't come with an RF remote, so you'd still need to buy one if you really needed that functionality.

Re: Replacement RF Remote that will work with Roku 2

You really need to convince them to update. The Roku 2 is long out of support and some services will start removing themselves, if they haven't already. An Express 4K+ is cheap, several times faster, has a better remote, and will be good for many more years. I understand their thinking, but try to make them understand a new remote is just wasting money.
