Turned out to be the batteries in my remote even though the 100% charged icon kept popping up (suspiciously) every so often. (Duracell, brand new, tested at 1.65V each on my multimeter.) Replaced them with some newly recharged Enerloop batteries and everything worked fine. I have had problems with ‘brand new’ Duracells before. I think I got them at Costco and if you read the reviews there they’re brutal. Anyway, all is good now. Hope this helps somebody.

This may work, using the old remote and the new stick, go to settings, remotes, and devices, remote, select add a new remote, a picture of where the pinhole is located on the remote, and select the one that's closest to the one on the remote . 5 seconds to select, exit the screen.
Go back to remote s and devices, setup remote for tv control, try CEC first, if that doesn't work, try IR.
Older remotes that don't have a power button, can still turn on the TV and volume
