My Roku device has suddenly developed a mind of its own! I keeps scrolling wildly through menu and the light in front flickers randomly. The remote buttons are not stuck, I’ve changed the batteries. I’ve rebooted ad unplugged. I can’t find a toll free support number!!!!
Thank you for posting here in the Roku Community, @Finnes!
We are grateful for you bringing this issue to our attention. We would appreciate it if you could kindly share the following information with us:
We also suggest resetting your Roku remote by pressing and holding the Back and Home buttons simultaneously for about 20 seconds. After doing so, pair it again and try using the Roku voice remote feature to see if this makes any difference.
We would recommend trying to see if that resolves your issue. Please keep us posted.
Thanks,
Jharra
The model of the unit is 3930X. I cannot find a number on the remote but it is the original remote. The issue occurred all of a sudden. I am not good with technology and tried doing what you suggested (pressing and holding the home and back buttons etc). When I did this the scrolling would stop. But as soon as I let go, it started up again. You will hAve to explain how to pair and what a voice remote is.
PS. Now it seems I can’t even get the menu I had before. What it’s stuck on now is the language choices scrolling erratically while an annoying voice keeps telling me how to turn on the screen reader!!!! Look! I am 62 years old! I expect things to just work!
PPS. I have at least been able to figure out that my remote is a « simple » one and not a « voice » one!
Try taking the batteries out of your remote. Leave them out.
Restart the Roku device. (unplug for a minute or two, and then plug it back in).
After the device restarts, make sure it is not still scrolling. If everything looks good, just quickly work all the remote buttons. (push them in, wipe them down, wiggle all crumbs and dust out etc.).
Then put batteries back into remote and see if everything works. (since you have a simple remote, it should just start working with your device with no need to pair it.)
Feel free to update this post if still having issues.
Yes, it sounds like IR interference, but the offending remote doesn't have to be the Roku remote. Another remote in the room could have stuck button and bombarding the front of the Roku device. Then Roku command like cursor up could get stuck in the IR feedback loop, it's just bouncing around the room hitting the Roku again and again.
So, take the batteries out of ALL remotes in the room, reintroduce them one at a time until you find the culprit.
