The remote that came with my TV stopped working, so I bought a new one off the Roku website, but it won't connect to my TV. It also didn't come in a box with instructions or anything, just a plastic bag inside a brown shipping bag, which I thought was kind of weird. So, did I maybe buy the wrong kind of remote or something? I don't remember which specific remote I bought, but it doesn't have power or volume buttons.

Sorry, but was the wrong remote. The simple Roku remote without tv controls IR only for stand-alone Roku's  like the  Express. ROKU Tvs use a completely different IR code set. 

You want a replacement Roku remote that will control your Roku tv, go to Walmart or Best buy, they sell Roku Wifi voice remotes separately, once paired with Roku tv it will control it by wifi.
