Captions are controlled using the * button on your remote.

Should add it depends on the app. Most use the asterisk "*" button to access the menu. Some apps, like Netflix and Prime, use their own captioning system you have to access while playing a video after popping up the time bar.

Hi @Dar4,

Welcome, and thanks for posting to the Roku Community!

We understand your trouble with the closed captioning feature on your Roku device that won't stay off, and we apologize for the inconvenience it has caused.

Closed captions are visible until activated. Channels that use the closed captioning settings available on your Roku streaming device do not affect the content of some service providers. It can often be turned on or off during playback.

Note: Not all channels make this feature available

Please be advised that most channels and apps contain their own settings and will override the settings in Roku menus. Check inside each channel's settings and turn off captions on each. Some channels have their own caption settings that are separate from the system settings.

For more information about turning closed captioning on/off, visit our Support page here: How do I enable closed captioning?

In addition, below are links to instructions for activating and customizing closed captions on some common channels.

Please keep us posted.

All the best,
Chel
