We need an option to turn off auto updates

Jump to solution

There should be an option in the settings to turn off, or at least have some control over the updates. I'm getting tired of the thing updating when it wants to & then my TV freezes while I'm watching something for several minutes & then restarts. I have a smart TV I use in another part of the house that asks me if I want to update when one is available. It's several years old. How hard could that be for Roku to add such an option? It's a machine, it's supposed to work for me & do what I tell it to do. Skynet hasn't gone live just yet so let me control my TV.

It won't happen because Roku thinks they own your Smart TV and your life with maximum surveillance that you agree to.  Ever seen the "user agreement"?   Here is Cliff Notes version:   "Because "Free" streaming televison is like water to my life, I will give you my Telvision (made by another company who I mistakenly thought I bought from and owned) so you have total control of its functionality, and also give you permission to effectively shut down my TV if I don't so exactly as I am told with surveillance tracking "updates"  and times of your choosing, not mine.   I give you permission to conduct surveillance in my home and sell my interests to 3rd parties.  Thank you Roku for all that Free TV!"

Roku has made you a slave of the first order.  Only if we say no to this **bleep** will it stop.

But we won't.  We will complain online as if we expect an AI company to listen,  as if we we were dealing with a drug pusher, but will keep going back for more.

There’s a compromise position:  Buy a $30 Roku instead of a Roku TV.  That way much less damage is done if anything goes wrong, and Roku only gets to surveil a portion of your viewing.  (BTW, I’ve never noticed my Roku Express doing an update, but maybe I’ve always been viewing something else when it happened.)

For minimum surveillance, you probably can’t beat Over The Air TV.  Preferably watched on a dumb TV or at least a TV with no internet connection.

Banned but back. Because why not?

I am in process of returning my Roku Ultra Stick.   I wanted this because it allowed for wired connect.  Then I saw it wanted me to have a Roku Acct and also my credit card info?  I might live with acct but no way anyone should give CC info.  Otherwise might try.

@LionelMan, you don't have to give your CC information, but you definitely need a Roku account.  There should be a way to skip the CC part, but it appears it's not always visible (I've seen plenty of Roku web pages that don't display properly depending on the browser and/or window size).  If you can't find it, use the direct noCC URL:  https://my.roku.com/signup/nocc

By the way, referring to the Ultra as a "stick" will confuse people when asking for help.  Sticks plug directly into a TV without the need for an HDMI cable and have certain features/limitations that are important when asking for help.  It's usually better to state the model number and not name when mentioning a Roku device.

Thats BS! There's very good reasons I don't want automatic updates. One, I need it to stay on 720p only!! I don't think it's a stretch to say your customers are so concerned about account security as you are!!
