Planned Obsolescence! - TCL TV Boot Loops

For the second time in about a month, our TV has randomly rebooted to a boot loop situation.   Changing the input source usually does a random reboot, then just now, it was changing from the home screen to an HDMI input which rebooted it to the boot loops!

I HAD TO RESET THE TV!   This makes 2 times now in just over a month.  One should never be forced to do this to a Television, but here we are.

Hi @pdxviewer,

Welcome, and thanks for your post to the Roku Community!

Thank you for bringing this to our attention regarding the issue with Roku TV constantly rebooting. We understand and hear you.

We need more details to assist you in determining that cause and finding the best resolution possible.

  • Did your TV recently receive any software update that might have triggered this issue before this happened? If so, share your currently running software version under Settings > System > About.
  • Is this happening on a specific channel while streaming or throughout the Roku platform?
  • What specific troubleshooting steps have you tried so far?
  • Please send us a photo of the issue on your TV screen if possible.

Re: Planned Obsolescence! - TCL TV Boot Loops

To be fair you're the one who chose to leave the automatic updates turned on. Every company now has so many different models and combinations of hardware and software that these kind of issues are inevitable.

Re: Planned Obsolescence! - TCL TV Boot Loops

Perhaps, but how can one avoid the auto update when a factory reset is done?  Most manufacturers implement a "Day 0" update where it's assumed you just purchased the product, unboxed it and it's day 0 of ownership so they pull an update to ensure that the OS is patched and any bugs are repaired.  Only after that time, will the end user (us) be allowed to turn that function off.

Prior to the first reset we had to do, we were stuck on the 12.x Roku Version and resigned to the fact that we may never get it.   That was until our hands were forced due to the first random boot loop thing which mandated the invoking of the reset button on the side of the unit.   Only after then, were we given the OS 13.x update.    So, while I slightly agree with your statement with the it's the user's fault to automatically allow the auto updates to happen, I don't agree that we are completely at fault.

I haven't brought this up as we haven't been able to predict or recreate it, but it randomly reboots the TV when we switch input.  Because it's so random, I can't report it and provide the steps to reproduce so Roku could look into the software build.   But, it's started to happen increasingly more than just a rare reboot.

Re: Planned Obsolescence! - TCL TV Boot Loops

@frenchy881, there is no leaving "the automatic updates turned on".  There's no way to turn them off.  Roku actually advertises that this is a "Feature" of their TVs.  🙄

Re: Planned Obsolescence! - TCL TV Boot Loops

Jecheal,

Obviously, if it does this looping again, I will grab my phone and record it happening and share it, but it's not a cut and dry case.

My reply before this one did give a clue to the software versions, we were stuck on the 12.x version before the first random reboot, then it auto updated to the 13.x version during the reset.    These values were grabbed from my Home Assistant integration as I can't disrupt my daughters  Percy Jackson movie marathon at the moment! 🙂

It's the TCL Model 55S425
Firmware: 14.0.4 (I believe that's the latest version?)
Hardware: 7131X

Troubleshooting steps taken?   Not really much we can do except invoke the reset button!   Powering it off for several minutes by removing the power cord had no effect to fix the issue.  Think of this as your windows  computer crashing and rebooting to Safe Mode every time, but on the TV, it doesn't show anything to indicate an error and just the boot logo, black screen,  power down, boot logo, black screen power down, and repeat seemingly forever.   We also left it for several minutes hoping it was some autorepair process, but it wasn't.

Re: Planned Obsolescence! - TCL TV Boot Loops

Thanks for the response, @pdxviewer!

We regret to hear about this issue you've been having with the TCL Roku TV. We're glad to help.

One reason your TCL Roku TV keeps rebooting by itself is an issue with the power adapter, cord, or even the power outlet. Kindly make sure everything is intact at the back of the TV. Aside from using an Ethernet connection, could you try utilizing a mobile hotspot to check if there will be a difference when accessing channels?

Additionally, if performing a hard reset by locating the reset button at the back of the TV doesn’t resolve the issue, please keep us posted.

Let us know what you find out, and we'd be happy to assist further.

All the best,
Chel
