Roku TV is stuck on the language selection screen after an update

After the firmware update today, my tv is essentially bricked. The ok, down and right selector buttons are no longer working. The physical tv joystick selection and pushbutton selector are no longer working. Resetting the tv during their diagnostic procedure clears the network settings. I am stuck on the language selection screen. There is no way to recover at this point. It's not the remote. It's not the hardware. The firmware update was bad. Roku is denying responsibility. Phillips tv says the firmware is created by roku. Roku damaged my property. I can't even use it as a terminal for other devices. I can't get past the setup. The tv is only 3 years old. So great marketing plan. Push out a firmware update and break a customer's device. Quite a scam. When or if the government ever reopens it will be getting reported to the ftc and probably the Oklahoma corporation commission. This is a crime on their part.

  • Andrew29  Have you tried doing a full factory reset of the TV?

It sounds like you reset the network settings which could also be part of the problem, so you might want to try a full reset, so you can get everything set up again.

yes. the full factory reset is what cleared the network settings. They cannot be changed if the on screen menus cannot be manipulated. That's the problem. There is no way to get through the setup screens. It is a fully functional brick.

I have a voice Roku Ultra, when I push the reset button hold it ten seconds, it opens with a picture of two remotes and freezes. I have tried it on two TVs, same thing both TV's I have another Roku device and it works on both TV's so this roku is very annoying losing sign on capabilities.

        Hi, WiFiS

If your Roku Ultra is showing the screen with two remotes, it’s waiting for a remote to pair. Here are a few steps to try:

        1. Restart the remote
        2. Restart your Roku Ultra: Unplug your Roku player from power, wait 5 seconds, plug it back in, and wait for the Home screen
        3. Re-pair the remote:
          • With the pairing button: Hold for 5 seconds until the light flashes.
          • Without pairing button: Hold Back + Home for 5 seconds until the light flashes.

    Welcome, Andrew29

Your Roku TV appears to be stuck on the language selection screen after a software update that disabled key controls, leaving no way to complete setup or recover functionality. To get a clearer picture:

    • Are any buttons on the remote or TV responsive at all (e.g., volume, power)?
    • Can you hear any audio cues when pressing buttons or powering on?
    • Try pairing a different Roku remote (if available), especially one with infrared (IR) capability.

You can get more tips here. Let us know how it goes!

yes. most all but the ok, down, right selector buttons on the remote, and the left right pushbutton joystick built into the tv. The tv pushbutton generates noises when pressed. It should be getting routed to the ok option. It can still be used for power control. The left and right movements on that control do nothing. The ok, down and right buttons on the remote do nothing. All other buttons on the remote make noises or are functional.

Can you hear any audio cues when pressing buttons or powering on?

yes.. see last answer. But not for all buttons as noted.

Try pairing a different Roku remote (if available), especially one with infrared (IR) capability.

There is no way to pair a different remote if you cannot access the tv menu system.

Noting the other post to wifis.. I will have to setup the tv again to try the back+home buttons suggestion to try to re-pair the remote. I will try that tomorrow. Both of those buttons were working on the remote so maybe a chance. Otherwise it's a brick. There is no way to set it up.

Having same problem. Did factory resets on two tvs to unpair voice remotes. Now only the power button works and I’m stuck on the select language screen

  • What an absolute piece of! All I did was a factory reset and now I have to buy a new TV! Been stuck on language since the factory reset. Nothing works! Going to buy a new TV, but you can bet it will not be a Roku

Ron I doubt you need a new TV. Disconnect the roku from the TV so the TV and the internet are the only two devices connected together. Now, factory reset the internet browers then your TV. I didn't have to go that far, but almost. I have three Roku Ultras. I went and bought the third one and bingo, no issues, works perfect. What I have determined by switching all three to the two TV's I have brings me to the conclusion the particular device stuck and won't reset, cannot be reset! It's broke; meaning the circuit board is blown and not worth fixing, although that is possible. Any device that uses circuit boards are subject to burning circuits. I work on RVs, Autos, etc, all using Circuit Boards and unless one can repair them, testing is out of the question. If it's under warranty, return it, or buy another and when you get the replacement keep it for a back up or sell it.

Ronroku1959 Before giving up on the TV, if you can't repair and reset the TV, I would try a new remote for the TV first and see if that helps.

I was out buying a new remote. You are right, that worked. Not sure why. Old remote still doesn’t work but the new one does.  Thank you both for the replies!
