Software update rollback option

How can I roll back to the original OS of our Roku TV?  Each "update" that comes out makes the TV more and more frustrating to use and it is so unresponsive now.  Very very very frustrating when All I want to do is go to the OTA Antenna stations but I have to sit and wait for all the other "features" to load, and then the controls lag making wrong selections increasingly common.

I'm never going to buy a Roku TV again if this is what the experience is for all of them.  Seems this is the case for all "smart" home products these days.

  • Wow - I'm impressed by the quick response.

This is an LG 65LF5700-UA and currently has software version 15.0.4 Build 5534.  I have tried to disable all additional menus, set wallpaper to most basic options, etc but it is still frustratingly slow.

I gave up on using it for streaming years ago and added a separate plug-in Roku for streaming channels, but I still have to use the built in Roku TV to access the OTA channels.  The OS updates have made that nearly intolerable.

Granted the TV is 8-9 years old, but software updates should not be what makes a TV completely unusable when it is otherwise in perfectly good working order.

I have a few other Roku TVs that are newer but notice they are progressively slowing so fear the same fate for them... Roku pushing software updates that force an upgrade and more unnecessary electronic waste.

My policy is to only use so-called "smart" TVs in "dumb" mode not connected to the Internet.  Then connect your streaming device of choice.  I would gladly pay double for a good old-fashioned "dumb" TV.

Good policy, but the reason I like Roku TVs is having a single remote to access OTA and streaming. Needing 2 Roku remotes, 1 to operate the TV and another to operate the channels makes for a very frustrated spouse!

Thanks for the extra info! dougietwoshades

We'd like to clarify, this is a Roku device connected to an LG TV, correct? If so, could you share the specific Roku device model? Are there any troubleshooting steps you have tried so far?

Hoping to hear from you soon!

No, this is a Roku TV.  LG 65LF5700-UA

I had to connect a 2nd Roku stick to it several years ago because the streaming channels had already gotten pathetically and frustratingly slow.  Now the basic TV functions (necessary for watching OTA) have gotten to be the same.

  • Well if you can't rollback to the original OS, I hope Roku creates a "basic" mode that disables all non-critical features and prioritizes responsiveness of core "TV" functions for OTA and other inputs.

I can upgrade streaming channel responsiveness with an external Roku stick, but no way to upgrade the main TV controls to keep up with added features in updates so we should be able to disable them and keep the TV responsive.

    Hi there! dougietwoshades

I understand that you want an option to have a rollback to a previous software version.

While we don't have an option to download the previous software version of your Roku TV at the moment, we would like to take a look instead of the issue you're having after the update took place.

Could you please share more about it, like what troubleshooting steps you did, and on what specific software version is your Roku TV currently in? (You can find this info in Settings > System > About.)

Hoping to hear from you soon!

  • I think dumb TVs are smarter that smart TVs, but keep in mind, you can always hook up a Roku (or any streaming device you choose) to any TV, smart or dumb.
