Does Roku offer a remote or upgrade that allows me to adjust my Sonos Soundbar Volume?

Hello,

I'm disappointed to find that my Roku Ultra remote can't be synced with my Sonos Soundbar. My Soundbar is the only device I use to provide me with TV audio. Does or will Roku offer a remote that allows for Sonos Soundbar volume control (or any soundbar make)?

If not, could there be a universal remote that can be synced with my Roku device, allowing me all functionality, same as the Roku Remote allowing for both TV power on/off and volume control?

Thanks

  • No, roku remotes only control tv volume. If you can get your tv controlling the volume of the soundbar via hdmi cec, then the roku remote will control the tv, which then controls your Sound bar.

Not sure if you've reached a solution, but I wanted to share my experience today. I was also searching for how to get the Roku remote to control the Sonos Playbar. I got it to work pretty easily.

    Here's my setup:

    Roku Ultra 4660X
    Vizio V-series 58" 4k
Sonos Playbar with remote Sub and 2 Play-1's as rear surrounds (all in 5.1 config)

    1. I disabled all speakers on my Vizio TV via TV settings.
    2. Made sure Roku connected to HDMI-1 (ARC) port
    3. Opened SONOS app on mobile phone
    4. Selected the room with the speakers I wanted to control
    5. Went into Settings, then "Remote Control Setup"
    6. Told it "Replace current remote", then "Continue"
    7.  Pressed "Volume Up" button on Roku Ultra remote
    8. SONOS noticed the signal and said it was complete.
    9. Selected "Done"

It all works as I wanted. Hope this helps!

I've been busting my chops on this question off and on for a couple of days.   The only problem is when I go through the above procedure and press the volume up button, the Playbar doesn't seem to see it.

Can anyone see something obvious I'm doing wrong?   Kinda driving me nuts.

      Thanks, Bruce

Which Roku remote do you have? I know I had to make the Sonos recognize infrared and I have the Roku Ultra remote that sends IR.

Do you need the Roku ultra for this to work?  I just have a “standard” roku streaming stick.

You may need the Roku Ultra remote. I think I read somewhere that it has the infrared (IR) functionality that the Sonos recognizes. I'm not an expert in this so please do your own research.

Steve B is absolutely correct. I've used my Sonos with three different types of Roku's now. His set up instructions should produce the results you're looking for.

Was one of the three setups a Roku TV? Specifically one that has a wi-fi (point anywhere) remote?

Asked and answered, there's no roku remote that can be synced directly with any brand of AVR or soundbar.

If you can live with IR, no voice search, there's the very cheap but very good One-For-All urc-7935 streamer remote, it is one device remote that can control 3 types of device tv, streamer and soundbar. Its also a learning remote. You can find them on ebay for under $10.

Appreciate it! I'll give it a try..

To the Roku folks.. Please release a remote that allows for one touch syncing with the Sonos Soundbar.

      Thank You,

If your TV has multiple ARC ports, it will sync with your SONOS.

I agree Roku make an infrared remote or IR remote with headphones that pairs with a Sonos PLAYBAR!!!!!! It only has an optical out no HDMI! Know your business Roku! Know the systems your customers might pair with this system! Technology changes daily, but roku needs to keep up!

Trying to figure out whether my TV volume control can somehow act as a master control for my Sonos soundbar and/or remain reliable, doesn't sound like a solution.

I simply need to be able to purchase or exchange my existing Roku remote for Roku remote that allows a simple one touch sync with my Sonos Soundbar, like I'm able to do with all my other remotes.

      Thanks,

      Raz

Roku remote WILL control the Sonos Playbar volume as long as you have the Roku plugged into the ARC HDMI port on your TV, and sync the remote on the Sonos app. Most TVs manufactured over the last 5 or 6 years will have the ARC port.

i have paired my roku voice remote pro (from streaming stick 4K+ (2021)) with my sonos beam sound bar.

the roku remote control volume button will only turn the volume up on my beam.  the remote  can’t lower the volume.  that’s my problem

the pro remote mute button works on the beam.

  • I'm not sure I understand why you can't use the SONOS app to make your Roku remote work. Most soundbars (including SONOS) allow you to use your TV remote in lieu of the soundbar remote. Set that up to work with your TV then set up your Roku remote to work with your TV and both should work.

It would seem that we don't want to do it the way you're describing. We want to use the Roku remote to control the volume on the Sonos. In my setup, I only use the Roku remote now to turn the TV on/off, change Sonos volume, and use the Roku for all my content selection (youtubeTV, Netflix, Amazon Prime, Plex, etc).

You wrote you currently use the Roku remote to control your SONOS volume. So if you're already using your Roku remote to control your SONOS volume, what, exactly, is your issue?

I thought you wanted to use your Roku remote to control SONOS volume and couldn't get that to work. So that is what I was trying to help with.

I have a TCL ROKU gen 6 TV with Sonos sound bar Ray but ROKU remote is not compatible.

I bought a Phillips converter that works but the remote is so big & bulky.

surely ROKU makes a remote that is compatible. That’s crazy is ROKU remote controls everything about the TV except the volume, does anyone know how to resolve?

Because the TCL/Roku remote uses wi-fi only, and the original Sonos soundbar is generally controlled with an infrared signal, the solution I found that works is a 3rd party device called the "Sideclick". It is made to clip on to the Roku remote and it works great. It makes the remote about an inch wider, but it's worth it. Alternately, but less conveniently, the Sonos app (at least with an iPhone) can also control the soundbar volume, EQ, compression etc. (which is weird because the app uses your home network's wi-fi, and it still controls the volume-it must use a different type of signal or band than the Roku/TCL remote).

  • While the ROku remote can not control the SONOS soundbar, the Sonos soundbar will accept  the orders from the Roku remote. You must open the SONOS app, go to the  soundbar settings, go to the TV input, and choose remote. It will tell you that only one device can control the SONOS and then you can change that to the Roku remote. I later turned off the sound on my TV and everything is now controlled by one remote. One minor issue is that when I control the volume I get a message on TV saying volume is digital out, but that goes away quickly.

  • I gave up on trying all the other "solutions." I have a Roku (series 6) TCL TV and a Sonos Playbar and Sub. I bought a device called the "Sideclick" which clips on to the left side of the Roku remote and gives the necessary IR signal to control the volume of the Sonos stuff. The TV remote is wi-fi (only-it seems).I still need the phone app (Android in my case) to adjust sub level, EQ, compression, etc.). To program the sideclick, I used a Samsung remote's volume buttons, which is learnable (or maybe the default) of the Sonos Playbar.

My situation might even be more odd.  Same Roku IR setup and same soundbar.  I had a Vizio TV and it all worked.  Got a new TCL Android TV and now it won't.  If I press the pairing button on the remote and start the setup process it works for vol up, vol down, but the roku remote has no mute.  I even tried a work around I saw somewhere to use a second remote for the mute (which sonos picks up).  But near the end of this the Roku box and remote auto-pair, and the sonos soundbar doesn't pick up the roku remote signal (no light flashing when the remote button is pushed).  I'm flummoxed.  Sidekick it is, I guess.

  • My TCL branded remote RC280/282 pairs and controls the volume of my Ray Soundbar.

  • Just go into your Sonos app, click on settings -> system. Click on the room your playbar is in. Then scroll down to remote control setup. Follow the prompts and you should be all set.
