Roku Channel Won't Play Anything At All

I launch Roku Channel. I choose a movie, ANY movie. Movie synopsis displays. I choose play. Movie synopsis refreshes and movie does not play. I also have a Roku/Starz subscription. Same thing. Synopsis page just refreshes when I choose play. This happens for EVERY movie on Roku. So at this point NOTHING will play.

I have checked for Roku update. System is up to date. Model 3920X - Roku Premiere, Software Version 11.0.0 build 4193-91

I'm sorry to hear that you are having trouble with the Roku Channel not playing any content. There are a few things you can try to resolve this issue:

    1. Restart your device. Sometimes a simple restart can resolve problems with channels not functioning properly.

    2. Check your internet connection. Make sure that your router is connected and that your device is able to access the internet. You can try testing your internet speed to see if it is sufficient for streaming.

    3. Check for updates. Make sure that your Roku device and any apps you are using are up to date. To check for updates, go to the Home screen, then select "Settings" > "System" > "System update" > "Check now."

    4. Clear the cache on your Roku device. This can help resolve issues with channels not functioning properly. To clear the cache, go to the settings menu on your Roku device and look for an option to clear the cache or delete temporary files.

    5. Check for conflicts with other devices. If you have other devices connected to your home network, it is possible that they are causing conflicts that are preventing channels from functioning properly. You may want to disconnect or turn off any unnecessary devices to see if that resolves the issue.

If none of these steps resolve the issue, it is possible that there is a problem with the Roku Channel itself or with the service you are trying to use. In that case, you may need to contact Roku customer support for further assistance.

Thank you for those suggestions. But I had already tried all of those except for clearing the cache. When I go into settings I see no option to clear the cache or delete temporary files. I also checked the placement of the WiFi receiver to make sure it was not close to ports/cables/other devices and it is not. In fact, nothing has changed since I set up Roku a couple of weeks ago and it worked fine until yesterday.

I have even reset the device, starting over with re-entering my network password and resetting the channels, etc. but nothing has changed. No Roku channel or program will play while everything else is working. But I happen to want to watch what's on Roku. I'm a new user and this is pretty disappointing.

How do I contact support? I am not seeing an option for that either. I find a support page but only links to the community or to FAQs, etc. - no contact info.

      Thank you.

How are you connecting to the internet?  Wi-fi, ethernet cable?  Do you use a VPN service of any kind?  What apps are you trying to watch?  Any require a username and password to log on? Netflix, Disney+, etc?

Danny, My tv has no way to clear cache but I’ve done everything else suggested by you and anyone else, including long calls with tech support with no change. The problem is somewhere in Roku’s or an internet providers system as I see it. I don’t believe it has anything to do with my equipment or doubtful anyone else’s! Get your engineers/tech people to fix your problem!!!

        CeJay50,

The same is true in my situation. I have tried everything suggested except that neither my TV nor the Roku settings offer the option to clear cache. And there seem to be a lot of people with this same problem. It seems that it must be within Roku's system or server.

Also, HOW CAN I CONTACT TECH SUPPORT OR CUSTOMER SERVICE?

I have not found anything on the Roku website or in the documentation that came with my system that gives any way to reach a tech support or customer service. When I go to support on the website it just keeps cycling me back to FAQs or the community.

I was even asked to complete a survey after one attempt at getting an answer to this issue and was asked what my next step would be. One of the options given was to contact customer service - which would certainly have been my choice. It's not as if I have idle hours to continue to spend on this problem, especially when I continue to hit a wall. I checked that as my preference and in the comments section I indicated that I found no customer service contact information and asked where I would find that. But I did not get a reply from Roku.

Similar problem-Roku channel will not stream any episodes. Using an Ultra. What a waste!  ALL other channels work. ONLY Roku channel has problem.  Tried all published fixes i could find, software update, reboots of equipment, remove/replace channel, etc. etc. etc.  All to no avail. Sent debug info to Roku--NO Response!

LCT Good luck with getting a solution. My Roku stopped working close to 2 1/2 months ago - same situation as yours. I tried all the suggested fixes, provided Roku with all the info they asked for, never heard anything about what, if anything, was being done, just generic "thank you for your patience" posts to this thread. Then suddenly yesterday it was working and is still working today. Never heard any explanation of the problem. I see that you did get a direct response right away so maybe that's a good sign. Maybe they have finally correctly diagnosed the problem, and maybe you'll get yours back quickly. I hope those of us who do finally have access to Roku again will be able to count on it continuing to work. Good luck!

I have a roku insignia TV and 2 premiere boxes and the Roku Channel doesn't stream. My son has a 2022 4k stick and it will play the Roku Channel. Same wifi service.

Meet me in Paris will not load for me.

    Hi keith_the_mc,

    Welcome to the Roku Community!

We recommend starting here to troubleshoot channel issues: Follow these steps in order:
    1. Navigate to the channel tile on the Roku home screen, press the * key on your remote, and choose 'Remove channel'.
    2. Next, restart your device from Settings>System>System restart. (For Roku TV Settings>System>Power>System restart)
    3. Once your player/TV starts up again, go to 'Streaming Channels' on the Home screen, and add the channel back once more.

You may also refer to this link: How to resolve a channel playback issue | Official Roku Support

Please try doing this and see if it helps with what you're experiencing.

Ummm, it's the Roku channel on the Roku device. There is no removing it. It did have an "check for update" option. I selected that. Got a message that Roku channel was updated. Still nothing will play. Restarted system. Still nothing on Roku channel will play. I am even paying for Starz and Discovery+ on Roku and they won't play either.

My 43" TCL tv won't stream roku content. Tried all the reset(S), tried uninstalling & re-installing the app, tried tech support, still nothing. Will stream other apps like Pluto, fawesome, etc. Any ideas ? Thanks

  • Hey Danny,

If you still work at Roku, this issue was resolved in June, but now it's happening again and it's October.  Any ETA on when it's going to be fixed?

        Hi Rodunn60,

Thanks for posting in the Roku Community!

I have a few questions to better understand the behavior you are seeing:
        1. When did this issue first start occurring?
        2. Do you observe this behavior while using any other channel(s) on your device?
        3. Have you tried removing the channel, restarting your device from Settings>System>Power>System restart (If you do not see a Power submenu, skip to the next step), then once it loads up again, adding the channel back once more to see if that clears things up?
        4. What Roku model device are you using?
        5. What are the steps to reproduce the issue you are seeing?

Once we have this information, we will be able to assist you further.

      Having the same issue.

I have a few questions to better understand the behavior you are seeing:

      1. When did this issue first start occurring?
Had been anxiously awaiting Weird on The Roku Channel. Tried it tonight and the issue occurred immediately. Then tried selecting programs on the channel at random, same results. Have not been able to successfully watch anything on The Roku Channel.

      2. Do you observe this behavior while using any other channel(s) on your device?
      No.

      3. Have you tried removing the channel, restarting your device from Settings>System>Power>System restart (If you do not see a Power submenu, skip to the next step), then once it loads up again, adding the channel back once more to see if that clears things up?
      Yes. It makes no difference.

      4. What Roku model device are you using?
      TCL 55S405, software version 11.5.0, build 4235-30

      5. What are the steps to reproduce the issue you are seeing?
Select The Roku Channel from the main menu, press OK, select ANY program/movie on The Roku Channel menu, press OK, select Play, press OK. Immediately returns to The Roku Channel main menu.

    I have a TCL Roku 4K tv

up until this week the Roku channel worked fine.

now when I try to play anything, the page just refreshes and nothing loads.

I have checked. The channel is up to date, the tv is up to date. I have deleted the channel, restarted the tv, re-installed the app multiple times.
    nothing works.

my older Hisense HD tv works fine, so it’s kind of weird that the newer tv isn’t working properly.

i’m in Canada if that matters.

  • Hey, having the same issue as multiple others, tried to play weird and the screen just seems to refresh and not actually load. Tried to play other programs and get the same issue. I can watch the 1949 Batman and Robin series though and I would love to know if that's the same for other people experiencing this problem or just me.

Netflix and Disney work fine, tried the suggested steps, up to date and restarted etc.

    Issue report tracker info:
    Model: 3810EU - Roku Streaming Stick+
    Software version: 11.5.0 build 4235-50
    Timestamp: 2022-11-17T15:53:06Z

Time to watch some classic Batman I guess..

  • I am having the same issue with roku channel free stuff. It goes to playS1/E1 and when I push ok it tries to load but just goes back to playS1/E1. Also when I push* I don't have a cancel channel option...only add or close. Please advise. I have done a factory reset 3 times and restart twice but without a cancel channel option it doesn't do anything

Gayewithane, it's not "cancel channel", it's "Remove channel" and you do it from the Roku Home Screen, not from within "The Roku Channel" app.

Well I found the remove channel and removed it...restarted my system and added the channel back and it still doesn't play. It's like the channel..not my end...hasnt the power to play.

  • I m having the same issue as the OP. The Roku channel on my Roku TV will not load. Other channels load fine.

I tried removing the channel and reinstalling it according to directions posted in this thread and the issue remains. It is only the Roku channel--all other channels are fine and launch/play with no problems and I am able to view content.

Restarting the channel sometimes helps launch it but often (mostly) does not help.

Occasionally, after much time I can get certain parts of the ROKU channel to load (only after getting a prompt to reload content by pressing OK) but the HOME screen of the ROKU channel, which contains the shows I am currently watching, will not load. Also, anything I can get to load will launch painfully slowly or not at all.

I can only get it to play after much fiddling--many times trying to launch the app, many times waiting to see if content will load, then when it finally does I hope the Home screen loads. Then I need to watch what I want to quickly in case the issue begins again.

I have nothing to add here, so this is my report.

ROKU channel version 8.0 build 72

    Software version 11..5.0, Build 4312

        Danny--

Yes. I am doing the steps in the exact order as described within this thread. The results are erratic at best. Currently I am unable to watch a program due to the Roku channel misbehaving, but my other channels including Netflix and Peacock play without issue.

  • I have just downloaded Roku last night. The new programs will play, but none of the other free channel will play. I deleted it and reinstalled, still nothing is happening.

      Hey Dodobird4

      Thanks for reaching out.

Did you restart your Roku device before re-installing the channel? That step is crucial when performing troubleshooting. If you haven't tried the suggested order (remove > restart > re-install), we would recommend giving it a shot once again. We also suggest doing the restart from the Settings menu by navigating to Settings > System > Power (If you do not see a Power submenu, skip to the next step.) > System restart.

Let us know if there's any difference after.

      All the best,
      Kariza

  • I have exactly same problem. It seems as though anything selected for viewing triggers messages "expired" or "no longer available" - what to do? I notice you receive a response rom Roku Support. Did the suggested procedure help you? It seems that it might not since it is not a channel issue, rather  all movies?! .... Mrt

That is the problem I'm having. It just keeps going back to the episode screen. I have not had anything indicating expired or unavailable. It comes up as if everything is normal but won't load. And it is not an issue with my server. Roku channels worked fine for a couple of weeks then this problem started that has now gone on for almost two months. There have been no changes with my server or connection. And with the number of people having the problem, we can't all have the same server, or even the same few servers. None of the resets or fixes suggested have made a difference. And I sent the info requested by Roku long ago but that has been ignored. The problem keeps pointing back to Roku but no help from them so far. Isn't it about time, Roku???

It’s just a wild suggestion, but I think that in recent months Roku had enabled a policy for cutting users, that have differences in region of user registration and region of device usage. See this:

        https://community.roku.com/t5/Channels-viewing/Roku-Channel-will-not-play-videos-in-Mexico/td-p/850608

So, in theory, if someone had used own or company vpn, while creating Roku account, and then on started streaming directly(without a vpn) - it is probably detected at Roku backend as a region discrepancy and the device is blocked for certain requests…

Just a suggestion here, in the lack of clear reasoning from Roku side.. 🙂

I gave up anyway. Using it just for YT, Netflix, AppleTV/Music, Radio and AirPlay streams from phone/ipad
