I just bought this Roku Express for one reason. It was cheaper than buying another Nvidia Shield Pro. I have an Nvidia Shield Pro in living room hooked up to my tv and I never have ANY problems with it. It connects to my PC in the basement. However I spend too much time in the basement on my pc and when I do I want to watch something while I may play a game or something on the PC at the same time. So.... I ended up buying this Roku device. I am no idiot when it comes to most electronics and setup. After trying to figure out how to connect to my pc with this thing, I finally find out you have to download a Media Player app for it. So I finally figure out how to do that and Get to point where I pick what to connect it to and there's my PC listed there. I select it and it sits there for hours trying to connect and it does absolutely nothing. There's nothing wrong with my PC or any antivirus settings. My Shield Pro connects just fine. I then tried downloading the Pex app for this Roku device and finally I get it to connect. But I dont want to use Plex.... I want it to connect right to my PC. There is a password on my PC server but there is no way to add that info to the Roku as far as I know.. I guess I should have spent another $200 and bought another Shield Pro
That's the same reason I buy Toyotas instead of Ferarris.
More seriously, I don't use my Roku in this way, but have you looked for clues here?

Is the PC running one of their tested servers?
No, It's just a simple windows7 share files and folders. I can connect to it with anything but the roku. Ive tried changing the info when you hit the star button before selecting a server trying to somewhat duplicate how the server is listed in my shield but to no avail
Everything thing else on this unit works fine. It found my wireless connection and connects to that perfectly. It connects to my PC with the plex app but I did't want to have a Plex server running on my PC as well as everything else.
The Roku Media Player only connects to DLNA servers. I don't know of any Roku app that connects to Windows shares and there's no native support for it in the Roku "OS".
