Black Video Display, Everything Else Works

So I have seen several posts about this issue, and I thought I’d add mine so that it’s made known that this is a common and fairly recent problem with Roku.

I have a Roku Express 4K+. When I turn on my TV, everything displays as normal, sound is good. When I go into an app it displays like normal until I click on an actual video. The video is black, but I can see subtitles, scrubbing, literally everything except the video. At first I thought it was just Hulu, but it’s every app that is supposed to display video.

I have had my Roku Express for 4 or 5 months and this hasn’t been an issue until a few weeks ago. And yes, I have done all of the tricks… I checked to make sure my TV display was on the correct setting, not automatic. I reset my Roku several times. I did that thing where you have to press all the remote buttons to clear the cache. I unplugged my Roku and TV for 15 minutes… I even unplugged them for 24 hours. My Roku OS is up to date. All of my TV cords are working and secure. There was a brief time yesterday where the video worked for about an hour, and now it’s back to this. Could this be a bug in the most recent update?

Obviously I’m very frustrated by this, but I’m also frustrated that there is not a place for users to report bugs like this in the system. If enough people report bugs like this, then they could get noticed and fixed, not forgotten in a stream of discussion posts.

Re: Black Video Display, Everything Else Works

Hi @Savie_Bomb,

Welcome to the Roku Community, and thanks for sharing your experience with this.

We'd like to be of assistance here. Could you tell us how this device is being powered? Is it plugged into a wall socket or the USB port on the TV? Have you attempted to check if there is a change by plugging it into a different HMDI port?

Please tell us more about this so that we can help you even better.

With regards,

Rey
