Love my Roku. Audio was perfect, however yesterday the Roku channel began sounding like a chipmonk. Tried unplugging the device; software update; restart; and return to factory settings. Does this mean I need a new device? Please share advice!
What device do you have. Model number?
Just adding to what @HDMIGuy said... To get the model number, you can go to Settings > System > About
Again, it's the model number that's important.

Roku Streaming Stick, 3600
Is it old enough, that it just failed?
That is possible. The 3600 is from 2016, replaced by the 3800 in 2017. That was a huge upgrade in performance. Still, if the 3600 is otherwise working, you'd want to do all you can to keep it in service.
However, with all the steps you've taken, it doesn't look good. I was hoping it was a more recent device, under warranty, and you could get it replaced by Roku. But, that's not the case.
Others here may have some suggestions, but were it my situation, I'd replace the device, know what I know about how much better the current sticks are compared to the earlier ones.
Just for reference, I had a 3500, and was very disappointed in how it performed. When the 3600 came out, I got one and was happy with it. After the 3810 came out, I got one (3600 still worked) and was very happy with how well it performed, nay, outperformed the 3600.

I experienced something similar…
After much head scratching, I found:
in settings, under accessibility the screen reader was activated and the speech rate was set to very rapid. Reset to normal and turned off screen reader..
problem solved in my case
