Re: The Roku box won't seem to turn off

Jump to solution

Yeah, I understand that the power button is a TV control and has to be programmed for a particular TV. I guess I was assuming that when you press the power button it would also be propagated to the Roku device itself (via a different method than IR) and it would be aware that the button was pressed. After all, why not send this information to the Roku, just like when any other button on the remote is pressed (even though this button also sends IR control to the TV). But if this is not the case, the Roku device would be completely unaware that the power button was pressed, and so it could not know to go to the home screen. In that case my suggestion would not be possible.

Pressing Home before powering down the TV is easy for me to remember. But not so easy for my kids or wife to remember. They (particularly my wife) are already confused by the plethora of options and having to click into an app just to watch TV channels (on YouTube TV for the local channels). It would be nice to have the ability to create shortcut buttons at the top of the home screen for, say "open YouTube TV app and go to live channel guide" or such. But that's probably not easy and would require some collaboration between Roku and the various app providers.

I find the whole thing quite cumbersome when you just want to do a certain thing and not go gallivanting through a bunch of other stuff to get there. Even once in YouTube TV (which I chose because it has certain channels that my wife needs) it is cluttered and confusing, with all kinds of suggestions for **bleep** to watch, that you have to wade through just to see what's on TV or find a certain channel. It's like its designed by 20-year-olds for only other 20-year-olds to use.

I remember the problems my elderly mother had with her TV stuff. No streaming, just cable TV. But it was so easy to press the wrong button and end up in lala land. I gave her a simplified remote control that basically just had volume and channel buttons, but occasionally she would scroll onto some channel that wasn't active and required some special button to be pressed that was only on the original cable TV remote with its like 100 buttons. Which meant a trip over to her house so I could get out the cable remote and press that button. A "cut the cable" setup like mine is now would be completely unusable for her.

It seems like there would be a market opportunity here for someone to create a system that is easy to use, or could be configured to be so, even for utterly non-tech-savvy people.

My Streambar responds to the Power button as if Home was pressed while also sending an IR signal to turn off the TV.  I only discovered it when I had the remote covered and pressed the Power button and the app I was using exited and the TV remained on.  I don't know why other devices don't work the same way.

I have 2 new Roku Ultra devices and on both of them when I press the home button it will go back to the main menu but YouTube Tv will keep streaming and eating up the bandwidth. Next time I turn on the Roku and load the YouTube app it's been streaming all the time I turned it off. Comcast has a data cap. Right now I have unlimited internet and I am paying extra for it. If I have to go back and not have limited there is no way I will be able to use the Roku Ultra. I have exhausted my search how to fix this but have not found one. I tried every setting and nothing works. When you press the POWER BUTTON is should stop everything period.

i am replying to my own post. What I am doing right now at least is I have a Kasa smart plug. I have the tv and Roku Ultra plugged in to a power strip and the power strip plugged into the Kasa smart plug. I have and Alexa device and I when I tell Alexa to turn off the TV it will turn off the TV & Roku Ultra. This is not and Ideal solution because not everyone has a smart plug or Alexa. One other note I also tried YouTube Tv on an Apple TV and when I turn off the Apple TV the streaming stops. But my wife can not use the Apple remote. I really like the Roku but this problem will drive me to finding a different remote for the Apple Tv and stop using and recommending the Roku to people.

@TBone1955, are you certain it's still streaming?  Roku recently added an Instant Resume feature and Youtube took advantage of it.  If you press Home, the Roku software will save the current state and restore it the next time you launch the app.  It may seem like it was streaming all along, but it shouldn't be.  To defeat this "feature", use the Back button (the one to the left of the Home button) to exit the app.  It may take several presses to return all the way to the Home Screen.

Thanks for the reply. That's not an option at my house. Not going into detail but when you press the power button everything should stop and not stream in the background.

By POWER button, are you referring to the HOME button? I don't have a POWER button on my remote.

My Roku Ultra has a red power button at the to of the remote. When I am done watching tv I press the home button to exit YouTube TV and then the red power button to shut of the tv and then in a few seconds later the light on the Roku will go out. Problem is a few hours later when I turn on the tv a click on the YouTube TV app it has been streaming the last Channel I watched in the background since the last time I turned it off. Right now I have unlimited internet but at the end of this year I might not. I appreciate all feedback but there is no way I am going to get my family to go through several steps just to stop streaming in the background. I think if you press the home button or power button what was streaming should stop. I hope this helps.
