Re: Roku streaming stick 3800x overheating issue

Periodically, we would get overheating warnings on the screen for our Roku 3800x stick. This particular time there was no warning, but suddenly the screen went to a full grey pattern and the remote was unresponsive. Turning the TV on and off, and the Roku was not found ("no signal" error from the TV). The Roku stick was very hot so I unplugged it and let it cool off; but could not get it back up and running. (The TV and that port are working fine.)

The next day, I can sometimes get to the main menu, but the remote does not respond, and after a minute the Roku shuts down completely. Other times, it locks up in the boot-up process.

The power was from the USB port on the TV, but other Roku devices in our house have to use the wall AC, and they also get hot from time to time, so we've eliminated air circulation as an issue.

So is my Roku stick essentially bricked now?

Re: Roku streaming stick 3800x overheating issue

Have you tried a USB power adapter plugged into the wall?  It could be that you've been overtaxing the TV's USB port and it gave out.

Yes, tried on other TVs using the USB port and the AC adapter. Guessing this is the end of it

Re: Roku streaming stick 3800x overheating issue

Hi @zebra2009,

Thanks for keeping us posted!

We understand you're having a problem with your Roku streaming stick, which was overheating. We're pleased to help. Please try the troubleshooting steps below.

  1. Carefully unplug the power cable from your Roku player and allow it to cool down.
  2. Find a more fantastic location for your Roku player; avoid placing the unit:
  • Inside a cabinet or other closed space;
  • On top of other electronic devices such as cable boxes, routers, or audio/video receivers;
  • In direct sunlight.

    3. Wait 10 minutes for your Roku player to cool down. Once cooled, plug the power cable back in and wait for the Roku player to power on. If you still see the above message or the Roku player shows a SOLID RED LIGHT, immediately unplug the power cable.

   4. Repeat step 3 one more time. If the problem persists, then you should stop using your Roku player.

You may check out this support article here on What to do if the red light is on or you see a "Your device is overheating" message

Hope you'll find this info useful. Let us know in case you still have any questions.

Best regards,
John
