Remote will synch but works on and off

Jump to solution

Remote volume works and on/off button. It re synchs but have to press buttons several times when trying to select an app. Then it freezes and won't move. Re-sync it several times and it starts working then it goes back doing the same thing. Replaced batteries but still the same

Welcome to the Roku Community, @edwgc61!

We understand that your remote is freezing and not responding to your Roku device. No worries! We've got coved, and we'll walk you through troubleshooting this remote issue.

Here are the things you can do:

  1. Remove the battery cover on the back of your remote.
  2. Take out both batteries from the compartment.
  3. Re-insert the batteries by putting in the negative (-) end first and then gently pushing the positive (+) end until the battery clicks into place.
  4. Repeat the same steps for the second battery.
  5. Put the battery cover back on your remote.

Tip: If your rechargeable voice remote has a pairing button, press and hold it for 20 seconds. If it doesn't, press and hold the Back and Home buttons.

When the status light stops flashing, your rechargeable voice remote has been successfully rebooted. Additionally, you can use the Roku mobile app to control your streaming device while troubleshooting your voice remote.

Hope this helps!

Best regards,
Jharra

Sorry to hear you're having trouble with your Roku remote. Sounds like you tried taking the batteries out which is a smart thing to do. A lot of times will fix a remote issue.

If you haven't already I'd also give unplugging the Roku itself a try. Unplug it, leave it for a minute or so and plug it back in and see it that does the trick.

You might already have this but you could also download the roku app, they have it on iOS or Andriod phone. You can sign in using your same account, or make a new one. After you download it go to the device section, look for connect now. It’ll search for your Roku device and hit connect. Also make sure Wifi is on on your phone.

If non of those things work you might try giving your Roku device a soft re-set. You won't lose any of your data but that could be where the issue is coming from. The two ways I know how to do this are below

1 – By using the remote itself. You hit the following combination

- Hit the Home Button 5x, Hit Up 1x, then hit Rewind 2x, and lastly Fast Forward 2x

You should see your Roku start the re-setting from there

2 - From your home screen

- Scroll down and click on Settings

- Then scroll down and click on System

- And then lastly scroll down to System Restart and click on restart.

I've heard of individuals who have had having similar issues to the one you described do this and find success after.  I'll have my fingers crossed. Let me know how it goes.
