New remote not working with Roku stick without voice.

Jump to solution

I have 2 tvs with Roku sticks on each one. I lost 1 remote. I purchased the basic remote for the stick from Roku site. It does not work on either TV. I noticed that the original remote has voice and this one doesn't. They appear the same otherwise. Should the remote without voice work ok with stick? Thanks for any help.

Roku Streaming Sticks are supplied with and ONLY work with either of the Voice Remote models.   These remotes control via WiFi signals that can penetrate through to the back of the TV where Streaming Sticks are normally used.  Streaming Sticks do not even have infrared (IR) signal receptors as all other models do.

The Roku Simple Remote, knock-offs by third party manufacturers, and universal remotes that say they can control Rokus all control via line-of-sight infrared (IR).

If you purchased any remote other than one of the Roku Voice Remote models it will not be able to control a Streaming Stick.

The official Roku remote app you can install on an Android or iOS works by WiFi and can control any Roku, including Streaming Sticks.

@SicilyNY, what's the model number of your stick written on it somewhere.  If it's very old (model number less than 3600) the newer remotes won't work with it.
