Note that point-anywhere remotes, like the Roku 3's original remote and current Voice Remotes, connect via radio frequencies (RF) and must be paired with the Roku unit you intend to use them with. Video from Roku re how to pair point-anywhere remotes: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=EK3T6eXqPU8
If instead, you purchased the Roku Simple Remote, unlike the point-anywhere remote that came with the Roku 3, this is an infrared (IR) remote that must have a direct line of sight to the IR receiver on the front of the Roku 3. You can't mount a Roku 3 out of sight if you want to use an IR remote. IR remotes can't be paired with a Roku, they just work with any IR-equipped Roku (i.e. all Rokus except Streaming Stick models).
