The new update pushes more advertisements

I know these days EVERY company is pushing their own ADS  and streaming from their platform to show you advertisement .

This last update is so huge it killed and dropped some apps.  I hope the ADULTS at Roku realize that most people will not watch their ad offerings.

Tivo did these 4 or so years back and every page on the guide shows you one of the Tivo ad movies for "free" filled with commercials , now Roku is following suit.

I pay streaming companies (Prime cause now they want to show NFL **bleep** 2.00 more a month to keep the ads away )to watch Advertisement free **bleep**.

Last week I had to re-sign into Netflix, Prime etc... on the living room , now last night by accident I clicked on Netflix in my bedroom unit and the same **bleep** .

I have one question does the micro card slot help with anything , adding more space to store these apps?  Would it help at all ?

I'm so fed up without these companies.  no more updates , making our lives miserable

Best regards

Roman

The SD card has only one function: storage space for installed apps/channels. It does nothing for the operating system. If you have more apps installed than space available, Roku offloads the least used apps to make space. When the offloaded app is used, it downloads it and make space the same way for it. So if one is often using little used apps (sounds like a contradiction!) you get a slight improvement in app loading speed. But it would have no impact at all over the functionality of the OS, ad placement, or overall general use.

Re: The new update pushes more advertisements

It might be useful to mention the model number. (Four-digit number.) And the apps that disappeared.

Roku hasn't made anything with an SD card slot in around 4 years I think, so your model is somewhere between middle aged and old. Sometimes app writers stop supporting old rokus. Also, apps get deleted for copyright infringement, not keeping up with Roku API changes, and other stuff like failed business model, creator moving on to new things etc.

Banned but back. Because why not?

The model is 4670x.

But keep in mind it's NOT about the apps.

my rant is this new update is a lot bigger and  is pushing Advertising to us all.

Are the new models of this big unit have more memory ? I saw a  article in here that says it has a faster processor , but did not see anything about more memory to support more BLOAT

Re: The new update pushes more advertisements

Excuse my memory , but I had like 8 apps, after the update it's showing 6 apps , and Prime now gets loaded up every time I click on it.  Now I have  Prime, Youtube, Plex , PBS, Spectrum.  there were more.

I hardly ever use Netflix unless I'm bored with my movies and tv shows I have on a 80TB Synology.

But my wife does use it and about 6 channels on Spectrum .  I guess I'm just a OLD c00k  but ADS just drive me CRAZY.

Re: The new update pushes more advertisements

The latest players do have more memory for channel storage (which is why they eliminated the SD card) and operational memory. Was that done to support more ads? I don't think so but who knows what happens within the corporate environment?

Remember that Roku makes far more money from ads than they get from selling hardware. And if you look at any other streaming player other than Apple, the home screen is covered in ads and/or "suggestions" for media. My Android based players are covered with them as well as a Fire TV Cube that is nothing but an Amazon advertisement on the home screen.

While I would certainly prefer a home screen with zero ads, I have to say that Roku is not as bad about them as the Android devices I have. The Roku home screen is far cleaner and easier to use than an Android TV/Google TV interface. Only Apple TV has a clean screen from what I've heard, but you pay more for that privilege, as well as being locked into only the apps they approve in their store. While the Roku app store is also locked down, they still have far more apps available than Apple devices.

Re: The new update pushes more advertisements

I just had to vent about it.

I do understand they have to survive by selling ads , and want Roku and Tivo to survive as I love both devices.

guess it's time to buy 3 new  4850's  and move on.

thank you all

sorry for the rant , feel better now.
