Re: Parent Controls for Home Screen Ads

Jump to solution

We are having the same problem with promiscuous and explicit ad content on the Roku homescreen and find the above answer unacceptable as well, for our children and ourselves. We're about to upgrade our Rokus and tvs and if there is no fix provided quickly we will be moving to another platform. Please create controls for ad content immediately.

I agree that we need parental controls on the device. I will not be purchasing another Roku until we get stronger parental controls.

This is absurd. For crying out loud, the very least you could do is allow parents to disable mature ads from the home screen of the device! The ads even show MA rating at the top. The info is in the metadata. It would only take a few minutes for a developer to apply this update. Roku is unwilling.

Re: Parent Controls for Home Screen Ads

This is not a "Solution" as is noted in the forum. This is simply a comment from your customer service team. A "Solution" would be either giving parents control over the advertising that is displayed on the platform OR allowing parents to toggle the advertising on/off so we have control over all the content on our computer screen. Calling this comment by MaryF a "Solution" is is misleading. You are solving nothing in your response @RokuMary-F

Until I can find a family friendly alternative I have blocked the roku ads at my router. My Asus router had a domain block feature. I followed a guide by searching the web for "block roku ads". There are other guides for other scenarios but some require purchases or technical skills.

This was a great tip! Thank you!

I used my Network DNS filtering to block all the Roku ad sites and I no longer have to worry that my kids will see these horrible banner ads! ...for now

Shame on you Roku for this "solution".  Parents are not just simply displeased with the ads, the ads are kiddie porn. You can't argue that Sex Next Door is anything else and it is completely inappropriate to be on your home screen for kids to view. Fix this issue asap and give parents the ability to filter/remove ads or we are no longer a Roku customer. Too many other options available to stick around for this non sense. This is a simple coding fix that Roku has been unwilling to implement.

Attention Roku employees @RokuDanny-R & @RokuKariza-D & anyone else...

I think there is a major upwelling of discontent over this issue, and I urge Roku to heed and ACT ON these complaints before it's too late.  Users DO have other streaming alternatives that are more viable than in years past.

Left unchecked, I fear this issue may be the straw that breaks the camel's back if the giant surge of discontent that would accompany breaking with YouTube in a few weeks comes to fruition.

I am also a parent (of early elementary age children), and the ads for horror movies during the last month or so leading up to Halloween were particularly bad for us. The kids even started hiding in another room until I selected the streaming service they wanted from the menu for them, rather than risking the literal nightmares the ads gave them.

It’s appalling that we’re forced to expose our children to wildly inappropriate images simply by turning in our TV because there isn’t an option to filter the ads (let alone to turn them off entirely).

Re: Parent Controls for Home Screen Ads

I understand that Roku's business model relies on ads for revenue, but it is completely inappropriate to not provide parents with basic content control. My 3 year old does not need to be exposed to ads for sexually explicit material or horror films like "Jeepers Creepers". I will be looking for alternatives or blocking Roku ads altogether until this is fixed!
