Roku Media Player Won't Play Any Video

I'm using Roku Streaming Stick +, software version 12.5

Roku Media Player version 5.5

RMP will not play any video from my external drive or my PC. It shows folder and file names, but no thumbnails. All of my videos are either MKV or MP4, and when I attempt to play one, all I get is the black screen with spinning wheel (and it'll occasionally indicate 13% progress, but no more).

I only discovered this issue a couple days ago. I believe the last time I streamed a video using RMP was about a month ago and I had no issues at all then. The last time I had an RMP issue was several years ago, and it turned out to be an issue with the external drive I was using at the time. That's not the case this time. My Windows DLNA is working, file sharing is on, my Roku has all the necessary permissions, and my external drive works perfectly. Was there an RMP update in the last month that may be causing the issue?

  • Roku device model, serial number, device ID, and software OS/version (these can all be found in Settings > System > About).
  • Tracker ID when this issue occurs (when you see this issue occur, press the Home button 5 times, followed by the Back button 5 times, and provide us with this ID).
