OvationNow Channel stuck on Older Roku

Jump to solution

We use two Roku ‘USB’ sticks on separate TV’s. One is an OLDER model while the other is NEWER (see below). The newer Roku starts and runs the OvationNow Channel successfully and runs as expected. However, the OLDER model starts the OvationNOW App but does not progress any farther than the logo screen, and seems to be stuck there. As far as I know, this is the only App among about 105 installed where this type of failure is seen.

Here are the model differences in the two ROKUs…

The NEWER Roku runs OvationNow App successfully:
Model: 3800X
Serial Number: YF0054344562
Software Version: 12.0.0 – build 4186-55

The OLDER Roku fails to finish starting OvationNow App:
Model: 3500X
Serial number: 2L6466025815
Software Version: 11.0.0 – build 4195-09

Both Roku’s have already been instructed to UPDATE the system, and succeed at doing that. I DO understand that this is probably due to some model and software version differences, but I just wanted to ask.

Hello! @FortePianoUSA,

A warm welcome from the Roku Community!

We appreciate you getting in touch with us. Your old Roku device can no longer support the most recent features.

This means this device will no longer get new features or streaming channels, updates to existing channels, or other software-related updates. You can keep using your Roku player to stream your current media. However, as those channel partners update, you may lose access to some channels.

If you haven't already upgraded your device, you should have received an email with offers to purchase a new player at a discounted price. You can also access this offer by signing into your Roku account and visiting the following website: Roku offers

If you have any other questions or concerns, please let us know.

From Ovation Now Frequently Asked Questions Page (28 Aug 2023):

Ovation NOW is available to download on the following devices

...

Roku
All supported versions

.. but it's not totally clear what they mean by this.  For the other supported platforms (iPhone/iPad, Apple TV, Android) they list version numbers as "version X or later".

Just what does "All supported versions" mean?  Supported by whom, Ovation or Roku?   Are only Roku models running the current Roku version supported by Ovation?   As of now, the current Roku release version is 12.0.   Your Streaming Stick 3500 cannot run anything beyond Roku 11, so it's already two versions behind.

On the other hand, if they mean Roku models supported by Roku,  the 3500 went on Roku's no-longer-supported list when Roku 11.5 was released in September 2022.

It's time to retire that 3500 anyway.  It is the only Roku to ever use that particular remote and the remote has not been available for years should you need a replacement.  There are some channels that have already dropped support for the 3500 (Ovation could well be one of them), and there will only be more in the future.  And current models are so much faster and more responsive, and have much more channel storage memory than the 3500, that you'll wonder how you put up with it for so long.
